Chai, or chai lattes, are made from a mix of spices that not only taste amazing together, but do some pretty incredible things for your health. While the chai lattes you're getting at Starbucks or the like might not be the best idea (added syrups are not your friend!) a homemade recipe does wonders!
Here's a breakdown of the spices and what they can do for you:
Cardamom - This spice helps the body eliminate waste through the kidneys, improves digestion and even acts as an anti-depressant!
Cloves - Reduces inflammation, improves digestions, and is a good source of vitamin K.
Cinnamon - Speeds up metabolism, lowers blood sugar levels, and reduces inflammation.
Star anise - A super anti-oxidant!
Fresh ginger (optional) - Improves digestion and absorption of essential nutrients.
My Personal Recipe (Vegan Friendly!)
Homemade Masala Chai: 2 ¼ cups water
1 whole star anise
1 tsp cinnamon
5 whole cloves
1/2 tsp cardamom
2 black tea bags
2 cups unsweetened almond milk
¼ cup sugar
- Bring the water, tea, star anise, cloves, cinnamon, and cardamom to a boil. Boil for 3-5 minutes until the tea is black and has reduced to about 2 cups. Strain and add the sugar. Add the milk and stir until hot.
- Makes 4 American-sized servings or 12+ Indian-sized servings.
