I'm literally just astonished. Pharrell is *this close* to being named in a lawsuit by family of the late Marvin Gaye. Ever since the ground-breaking, and some say, creative-suppressing $7.3 million "Blurred Lines" lawsuit, the music industry is on pins and needles. But that's putting it mildly. More like in the depths of panic mode. And if they're not, you can bet Pharrell and his camp are in a fit to salvage his "Happy" hit from both tarnish and a raid on the piggy bank!
Here is a mashup of Marvin Gaye's "Aint That Peculiar" and Pharrell's, "Happy." It's astonishing. You can read the full article on While no one has come out to announce litigation, I can only imagine a swarm of lawyers working overtime on this as I write this. Yikes!
Frankly, there are so many songs that overlap in base progressions that these lawsuits are only going to become more and more common, I think. I wonder how many songs that have been out for a long time that would have been sued over, had they been given the opportunity.
This has been such a hot topic lately. I really hope Pharrell's reputation is able to recover from all of this. He's one of my favorite producers and has been since N.E.R.D's In Search Of album. He's also a terrific songwriter.
That's the million dollar question. Where is the line? i just don't know.
@darcysdiary I think the idea of music copyright is really complicated. Hooks will be similar and ripoff lawsuits will happen. Other times, though, the similarity is clearly too much. But where do we draw a line?
These sound insane together! Poor Pharrell. @Amog32 too many people sue over stupid things. But this sounds like a rip off to me. I don't know
