A sublime performance from David Villa earns the NYCFC expansion team its first win in their MLs history as they down the New England Revolution 2-0 at home.
Firstly, I was worried about the game watching this. The pitch size looked mighty small in all honesty and if the game is to be played like this all season while at Yankee Stadium it could put off the international markets the MLS is trying to break into. Having said that the game itself was excellent, providing multiple opportunities on goal for both sides, something New England lacked with the absence of Lee Nguyen in their 3-0 defeat to the LA Galaxy the weekend prior.
New York however look a solid side. Mix Diskerud is really providing an influential touch on the ball no matter if it is defensively or offensively, and David Villa is still a world class player, as his goal and assist both proved.
New England look lost without Jermaine Jones. A lot was made last season of their incredible record with him in the side, and it would appear that trend could continue as they provided no midfield pressure to help their attacks, ultimately only putting 1 shot on goal in the 90 minutes.
