An impressive Arsenal cannot find the third goal they need to advance into the Quarter-Finals of the Champions League, and will join Chelsea as Premier League clubs continue to crash out of the competition.
Danny Welbeck looked particularly impressive in the first half, almost putting Arsenal up 2-0 at the break, but it was Olivier Giroud and Aaron Ramsey that scored for the Gunners. Arsenal put immense pressure on Monaco and were constantly in the driver’s seat, but their lack of finishing cost them equally as much as their poor first leg. In the end the 3 away goals Monaco scored in an appalling first leg from Arsenal’s standard cost the Gunners. Starting behind the 8-ball is usually one way to write your own fate, and certainly that was the case with this tie.
As for Monaco, the win is a return to the Champions League fame they once were known for, making deep runs into the tournament. Whether or not they have the quality to make it to the Semi-Finals is extremely doubtful, and they could arguably be the weakest of the 8 sides that will remain after this week, but that is not their concern. For them, they will get the chance to enjoy more Champions League football in April.
