[17th-Apr-15] Match Preview: Stoke City – Southampton

Stoke’s Victor Moses is out for the rest of the season after picking up a hamstring injury, while Marc Wilson is doubtful following his hip injury sustained last weekend in the 1-1 draw with West Ham. Peter Odemwingie was back in training after 8 months injured this week for Stoke, but is considered a game-time decision. Southampton’s Victor Wanyama is suspended for yellow card accumulation, while Filip Djuricic is out injured; Florin Gardos is expected back for the Saints.

Background

Southampton sit 6th, a point out for 5th and 5 from the Champions League where City have slipped into the final spot. Southampton will need help however, with City hosting struggling West Ham this weekend. Stoke are looking to finish in the top half of the top flight in England in back-to-back seasons for the first time in 4 decades.

Head-To-Head

4 out of the last 5 meetings between the sides have been draws, the only match not being won by Southampton in October of this season. Stoke are however unbeaten at the Britannia in their last 4 games against the Saints but the Potters are on a 4 game winless streak. Stoke also only have 4 clean sheets in their last 17 matches at home, 2 of those having come in their last 3 at the Britannia. Stoke’s weakness is also from set pieces, where almost half of the goals they’ve conceded have come from. Stoke have also yet to see a player sent off, a feature only matched by Burnley at the moment, yet Stoke have never gone a season in the Premier League without having a player sent off.

Southampton are on a run of 3 straight on the road without a victory but have also only lost 1 of their last 5 matches in the Premier League. Despite this good form, Southampton have only scored a first half goal in 2 of their last 10 Premier League fixtures but the Saints have also yet to give away a penalty this season. A draw from their remaining games is enough to see them overtake their total in points from last season, which stands at 56. The Saints’ 15 clean sheets is also best in the Premier League, and their 22 goals conceded the lowest in the top 4 divisions of football in England.
Prediction: Stoke are good, especially at the Britannia and I can see them sneaking all three points here.
Stoke 1-0 Southampton

@Spudsy2061 Looks as if Villa could give them a fight. Can you imagine if Sherwood comes in and then gives them a trophy and Europe?
@CitySarajevo Very true but if Arsenal win the FA Cup they will get in.
@CitySarajevo Not if they keep losing.
@Spudsy2061 Still feel they get Europa.
@CitySarajevo Really big blow. Champions League is gone. Europa League might follow.

[21st-Feb-15] Match Preview: Aston Villa – Stoke City
New Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood will take the reins for his first match in charge as the west midlands side host Stoke City. Carles Gil &Gabby Agbonlahor are set to return to the squad for Villa, which they remain without the services of Nathan Barker and Philippe Senderos at the back. Stoke City are also suffering from a few injuries and missing players, with captain Ryan Shawcross alongside Marc Muniesa on the injury list. American Geoff Cameron is also banned for the match but Stoke will have Marc Wilson & Erik Pieters available for selection. Form suggests a stale game. Villa have an appalling scoring record, the likes of which only Portsmouth avoided relegation with in previous Premier League campaigns, while Stoke City are coming off the back of 4-1 losses to Manchester City and Championship side Blackburn Rovers. Form also suggests the worst for Villa, having lost 5 consecutive Premier League games they could make it 6 in a row for the second time this season. They are also without a win in their last 10 games, managing only 3 points from them and have yet to win in the Premier League in over 2 months. The 12 goals scored in 25 games is also the lowest in Premier League history. Stoke City on the other hand have only lost one of their last 5 away Premier League games. Stoke also possess the second lowest shooting accuracy at 36.6% with only Aston Villa being worst but the Potters’ impressive disciplinary record could help them, being only one of two clubs (the other being Burnley) yet to have a player sent off this season. Striker Peter Crouch is also in form having netted in the last 3 games for Stoke. Predictions: Flat game but both sides have their chances. Villa fight well for a point. Aston Villa 0-0 Stoke City
[21st-Mar-15] Match Preview: Stoke City – Crystal Palace
Jon Walters looks set to play through a fractures cheekbone while Victor Moses will remain sidelined due to a hip injury for Stoke. Erik Pieters and Phillip Wollscheid are also game time decisions for the Potters. Crystal Palace look to possibly be without Wilfried Zaha, Jason Puncheon, and Jordon Mutch. Mile Jedinak remains suspended with Marouane Chamakh, Frazier Campbell, and Chun-Yong Lee all out due to injury still. Palace have won only 1 of their 7 ever top-flight meetings with Stoke back in 1979 and the Eagles enter the game with only one clean sheet in their last 9 games. The revival under Alan Pardew seems to be better on the road for Palace, dropping only 1 decision in their last 5 away from Selhurst Park but the Eagles have rescued the 2nd most points from losing positions, with only Spurs a point better. Stoke enter the game in good form, winning 5 and losing only 2 in their last 8 games at home with the 2 losses only being to 1st place Chelsea and 2nd place Manchester City. The Potters are also on course for their best ever season, needing only 9 more points the rest of the campaign to set a new club record. Stoke’s 15 goals conceded from set pieces is a worry, tied worst with Burnley but the club have yet to drop a single point when scoring first, a record they’ll look to continue. Predictions: Palace look to be almost safe but Stoke, much like Swansea, have has a quietly confident season. Hughes has them unbeatable at home at the moment and it looks with Palace’s injury the game will be too much. Stoke City 2-0 Crystal Palace
To my sports fans...
I said this in a previous card, but I want you all to know that I don't think I'm going to be able to be on Vingle as much, at least for now. I am in my last semester of college right now and really need to focus on my studies as I finish my degree... plus... you know... that job search that everyone talks about! I've had so much fun being involved with all of you over the past few months through the MLB playoffs (how great were those Mets!?!?), EPL and NFL seasons - culminating with the Super Bowl next week! I know this community can be an amazing resource for everyone and I hope you all continue to share ideas, thoughts, favorite plays and players and games and everything else that I've seen go on here recently. You guys are the best! Thanks for reading and commenting on my posts! What's with the Chinese football league?
There's something strange happening in the football world right now. Even with all the money and appeal that the world's top leagues bring - the EPL, La Liga, Germany's Bundesliga, France's Ligue 1 and Italy's Serie A, some top players have recently departed their clubs and gone to accept enormous contracts in the Chinese Super League. The latest star to make the move is Chelsea's Ramires, a player at the peak of his career at age 28. I'm stunned. There is a history of great players making the move to China, but in the past it has been players at the very tail end of their careers moving across the world to make huge amounts of money before they retire. Think Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka, who in recent years went to Shanghai to play. And I understand the appeal for an aging player. Someone like Drogba couldn't keep up with the pace of the top European leagues anymore, but could still be a huge star in China, where the league quality is extremely low. They are major marketing moves for the Chinese teams too, who can bring in world superstars to boost their image. But recently, the players making the move have not been aging stars. They are players in the prime of their careers, like Chelsea's Ramires. Other players to recently make the move are Roma's Gervinho (formerly of Arsenal), who is just 28 years old and Colombia and Inter Milan's Freddy Guarin, a young midfielder of enormous quality and potential. He has been on the radar of the top EPL clubs for years, and to see him turn them down in exchange for a move to the low-level China league is shocking. Alessandro Diamanti, Momo Sissokho, Demba Ba and Paulinho are other players who have recently moved from their European clubs to play in China under huge contracts. It's a bizarre phenomenon. Football in China is not known to be a very popular sport, but the Chinese owners have loads of money and are doing a good job convincing top players to come and join them. I'm sad to see exciting players like Ramires and Gervinho leave Europe, where I could watch them in the Champions League, but I'm fascinated to see what they will make of themselves in China, and to follow along to see if the Chinese league continues to pry away great talent from Europe. @InPlainSight @AbdulrahmanSaad @trinityarcangel @thefeels @MarcusJiles @DerekGumtow @havic @yaakattackk @bnzatton @SherzTYCi @krishntejanand @addri @mishthi @andwas @NimishMathur @Sydsocquet @starli @kyleatekwana @BenjiPhilip @Eduardo14 @AshfakEjaaz @EmanueleYagoda @Bobs What do you make of this recent trend?
7 tips to make six pack abs
7 tips to make six pack abs  So the first step for a six-pack is to look at what you eat, and stick to lean meat, vegetables, and cut out all the sweets and carbs. The second step is to commit to a strong strength training program - not a contract you make twice a week now, but three to four times a week, with determination and focus - to see your abs change. The good news: Most movements do not require additional equipment or equipment, so you can do it at home. The final ingredient for building your six-pack is a solid daily dose of cardio. Improving your overall fitness will help train your body to use energy efficiently, and teach it to start burning calories the minute you start moving. Uruguay v England: Rooney to prove his worth in favoured role
England simply must beat Uruguay to keep qualification in their own hands and while Three Lions fans’ nerves are jangling history suggests Roy’s boys should do the business against the South Americans. Being a European nation England play an admittedly limited amount of football against South American opponents but a look back at the last 20 games shows that we have rarely struggled against the likes of Uruguay. drow last names In the last 20 games against sides from South America England have lost just three, drawn five and won 12 times including against Brazil, Argentina and indeed Uruguay. True, most of these games have been of the friendly variety but England’s World Cup record against South Americans also provides encouraging reading with three wins, one draw and just one defeat – to Brazil. So with the stats suggesting reasons to be confident here are three solid bets for the crunch game. Wayne Rooney to score first @ 6/1 Wazza’s form has been the source of much debate and having never scored a goal at a World Cup finals this one is a bit of a Gut Truster pick. However, the Manchester United man is England’s all-time leading World Cup goal scorer when qualification games are included and after being restored to his favoured central position has never had a better opportunity to shine. We’re backing Wayne to fire us to glory and at 6/1 to open the scoring you should too! Over 2.5 goals to be scored @ 21/20 England will concede, they always do, so any win is likely to need at least two goals from the Three Lions, especially with Luis Suarez likely to be restored to Uruguay’s starting XI. Games involving England and South American rivals are often high-scoring affairs with 20 goals recorded in the last six meetings and an average of 2.85 over the last 20 games. England to win 2-1 @ 9/1 Just six of the last 20 games where England have played a team from South America have seen any side record a victory by more than one goal. So, if you’re backing Uruguay to score – and you should be as they’ve netted in 19 of their last 19 fixtures – then 2-1 looks the most likely result if England are to win, making 9/1 simply too good to turn down.
