Only a 14 game season for the FA Women’s Super League 1, here’s an update on how the top Women’s league in the world is faring.
1st Place – Chelsea Ladies
Only conceding once against Notts County, the Chelsea Ladies have won 3 out of 3 to sit as the only side with an 100% record so far on 9 points and a +6 goal difference. Their wins include Notts County, Bristol Academy, and Liverpool.
2nd Place – Arsenal Ladies
Still unbeaten, Arsenal sit 2 points out of the top spot after their 1-1 draw with Notts County before beating Bristol Academy and recording an impressive win over Manchester City. The Gunners now have 4 goals in 3 games only conceding 1 like leaders Chelsea.
3rd Place – Sunderland Ladies
Probably the surprise at the start of the season, Sunderland Ladies have won 2 of their opening 3 games this campaign to sit in third. They opened the season in impressive fashion, downing the defending champions Liverpool 2-1 before losing 1-0 to Manchester City. Just this past week, they recorded a 2-1 win over Bristol Academy, marking 4 goals in 3 games for the Black Cats.
4th Place – Manchester City Women
Strong mid-table Manchester City have had a mixed bag so far and sit on 4 points. Opening the season with a scoreless draw against title contenders Birmingham City, they beat Sunderland before dropping their 1-0 decision to Arsenal. This means they've only scored and conceded 1 goal all season, giving them an even goal difference.
5th Place – Liverpool Ladies
One of the two big shocks so far, defending champions Liverpool Ladies sit in fifth after managing just 3 points in their opening 3 games. They lost 2-1 to Sunderland before beating Birmingham by the same scoreline and dropping a 1-0 decision to the league leaders. Liverpool, expected to contend for the title now could quickly be pushed out the picture if form does not improve quickly.
6th Place – Notts County Ladies
Notts County Ladies are doing their best to survive in the top flight, securing 2 draws in their opening three games to sit in sixth by just a goal scored. They opened the season giving league leaders Chelsea a run for their money before falling 2-1, then managed a solid 1-1 tie with Arsenal to secure a well earned point. Just this past week, they drew struggling title contenders Birmingham City 0-0 to sit above the relegation zone.
7th Place – Birmingham City Ladies
Outside title contenders at the start of the season, Birmingham City Ladies now sit 7 points off the top after a disappointing start to their season. The blue and white started the season with a strong 0-0 draw against Manchester City before dropping a 2-1 decision to the defending champions Liverpool. Just this past week, they drew 0-0 with relegation candidates Notts County to give them their second point on the season. For now, it looks as if they title dreams will have to wait another season.
8th Place – Bristol Academy Women
Relegation candidates from the start of the season, Bristol Academy will have to start the season behind the 8-ball as they have failed to secure a single point and only 1 goal in their 3 games so far. They opened the season with a 4-0 thrashing at home to the league leaders Chelsea before losing 2-0 to Arsenal on the road. Sunderland we the next club to beat the bottom of the league team, 2-1 at Sunderland. Bristol Academy need a win and soon if they are to put up a fight to stay in the FA Women's Super League 1.
