Abbye "Pudgy" Stockton
Abbye "Pudgy" Stockton was introduced to weightlifting by her then boyfriend, Les Stockton. When she began weight lifting, she saw her body transform. She was known for her curvaceous and strong body. She was popular on Muscle Beach, she was a bodybuilder, a writer on fitness training, and she helped organized women’s weightlifting contests.
Patsy Chapman
Before bodybuilding, Patsy Chapman was an active girl -- participating in sports like basketball and swimming. Bodybuilding was something she did to keep fit, but when she realized there were monetary prizes involved in bodybuilding competitions, she decided to compete. In 1979, She won against 48 other contestants and won the title as, "Best Body in the World."
Katie Sandwina
Katie Brumbach, later known at Katie Sandwina was the most famous strongwoman of the early twentieth century. She was known for her impressive circus acts with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus which included lifting men over her head and bending steel bars.
Mlle. LeZetora
Mlle. LeZetora was an athlete, known for the photo of her called, “Colored Lady Athlete - Heavy Weight Act,’ circa 1900,” which can be found at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, New York Public Library. Unfortunately, there isn't a lot information documented about this iron-pumping beauty.
Laverie Vallee née Cooper
Laverie Vallee née Cooper, also known by her stage name as, "Charmion" was a strongwoman and a trapeze artist. She performed acts in the risqué Victorian street attire. She would display her strength while removing articles of clothing at the same time.
