Help save Springside!
“No work is insignificant. All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence.”  ― Martin Luther King Jr. Like many other poverty stricken and abandoned neighborhoods sprinkled throughout downtown Atlanta, Springside Commons would be called an eyesore by most passersby. Most people would take one glance at a neighborhood like this and turn their heads or speed past, sure that they had stumbled onto “the wrong side of the tracks.” And as true as this may be, there is still hope here. Nestled within the lush greenery of a forgotten area, lies a paradise or oasis teeming with life and promise.  O is one of the proprietors of Springside Commons and as of later years, is one of the only residents left that stands or cares to make a difference. Most owners have moved away from the area due to crime or unfortunate circumstance in the surrounding areas, but O and a few residents have stayed behind to redeem the neighborhood from its current state. A once flourishing and prominent community of people with lives, dreams, hopes and families--Springside now stands to become another inner city casualty if there is no intervention.  However, over the past few weeks, with the help of a few good friends and hands--Springside has been receiving quite the makeover and transformation. O, a skilled and experienced craftsman, carpenter and gardener has created some amazing structures and landscaping out of seemingly dilapidated and rundown buildings. Donating his own time and labor, O and his friends are making a difference every day. Gardens, earthen staircases, rock-lined paths and eclectic woodwork have sprung up in the middle of this neighborhood and has inspired all who have seen it to come on board and help restore this once-forgotten community!  While taking part in and documenting the restoration process, Nicole Goolsby and Erika Allen have decided to make a short film that shows the very heart of Springside. They want to bring attention to this community and others like it by completely restoring these homes and living area into a community garden where children and anyone who wants to learn, can come and see the ins and outs of urban gardening and self-sustainability. Unfortunately, recently the city of Atlanta has threatened to condemn the property and community, under the pretense that it is abandoned and dangerous. O and his friends want to prove the exact opposite by showing that this is very much still a community of family, friends and hopes and dreams. O and his friends are working every day to fix structural problems and to make sure that it is clean and safe.  That’s where we need help from you! Through our GoFundMe project, we hope to generate donations so that we can continue to build up Springside’s garden and property to restore it to a beautiful state where people can come to learn and grow. We believe that his neighborhood and others can benefit from a little hard work and TLC. Thank you for any and every donation that you can make because no matter how small, it will make a huge difference! Please help Save Springside from becoming condemned--real people live here! https://www.gofundme.com/SavingSpringside https://www.facebook.com/savingspringside www.instagram.com/savingspringside
