It comes out next week, and I am excited!!
If you know me, you'll know that I'm a big fan of reading Jane Austen, YA fiction, dramatic adult fiction, absolutely no categorically 'romance' books, and a lot of romantic science fiction.
So that basically means that I'm super psyched about Judy Blume's new adult fiction book that will come out on June 2nd because I am SURE to love it. Sure, it only really meets 2 of my categories (she's a formerly YA author, and now it's dramatic adult fiction)
The Story:
"In the Unlikely Event" surrounds the (fictional) stories of real-life plane crashes that occurred in late 1951 and early 1952 in Elizabeth, New Jersey, where Blume grew up.
Why did Blume want to write about this?
Because she suddenly remembered that she didn't really remember anything about the events even though they happened right there where she was. She got around to thinking about why she didn't know anything about them, and realized it was because "adults didn't talk to kids, not about that stuff" and so "it was a crazy time. We were witnessing things that were incomprehensible to us as teenagers." She buried the stories, but when she remembered she knew she needed to write about it.
Blume Classics You Need To Read
In case you're not already an avid Blume read like I was, here's a few books of hers that you really should read. Even if it's too late for them to help you out, keep them in mind as a great gift for young girls and teenagers who might be struggling with the issues in the books! Her books captured perfectly the angst and confusion accompanying the sexual development of puberty, at a time when most parents buried their heads in the sand (the 80s and early 90s).
