Songs of the 2015 Lollapalooza Festival: "Radioactive" - Marina & The Diamonds
After her stage at this year's Coachella Art & Music Festival - her second time on the line-up - music critics and fans alike have been dubbing Marina Diamandis the 'queen of this year's music festivals' - and, as a huge fan myself, that's no real mystery to me.
The music of Marina & The Diamonds is equal parts whimsy and austere. There's punchy dance anthems and ballads that reveal a vulnerability that's all too relatable. Her persona is part futuristic, part bohemian - a theme that's been somewhat permeating through our music festivals as of late.
The song "Radioactive" off her second album, Electra Heart, is a song that always reminds me of summer, making it a perfect track for my Summer Music Festival collection. In fact, according to an interview with NME, Marina wrote it during a summer in New York City:
"I wrote 'Radioactive' in New York in the middle of a heat wave. Introduced to a glittering new nightlife, I fell in love with New York; it has this magic, fizzing white energy that no other city in the world has. I felt happy and was inspired to write a song that felt light and euphoric, a more streamlined, minimalistic style of songwriting."
You can catch Marina & the Diamonds at the Lollapalooza Music Festival in Chicago on Sunday, August 20th. Or, for a full tour schedule, visit her official website.
