Summer weather means a new influx of clothes, shoes, and accessories being advertised and overwhelming you at all angles. From the beach to the workplace, I've narrowed down the five kinds of shoes that will be appropriate and (mostly) comfortable in a number of situations, whether you're a working girl, a lady who lunches, or simply on vacation.
Type #1: The Comfy Sandal
This one is a no-brainer. A comfy sandal is appropriate for the beach, long walks, running errands, but it doesn't need to be ugly! Birkenstocks are a huge hit since the NormCore movement, but they have been a comfortable option for decades.
Type #2: The Wedge Heel
I am a strong believer in minor pain when it comes to shoes, and I tend to choose wedges over stilettos. In the summer, you never know where the long day might take you, so I picked a wedge, which is great for going out at night, but can be worked into a work outfit for a day-to-night look, and is easier to walk in than other heels.
Type #3: The Work Flat
No matter where you work, intern, or aspire to work, every woman needs a reliable pair of flats to look professional and chic without being too uncomfortable for the full day. Flats can dress up jeans, dress down a suit or skirt, and are all-around necessary. The D'Orsay style, which I chose to feature, is both simple and smart, but a regular ballet flat will do as well.
Type #4: Mules
Mules are a hit this summer. Chalk it up to the 1970's trend on the rise, or the ease of the slip-on, but they're all the rage. Flat mules are always a comfortable option, but I'm showcasing heeled mules, which are great for work (just don't try to wear them on the commute if they're too high!) but also a sophisticated option that goes from day to night.
Type #5: Classic Sandals
This is the most basic and the most necessary. Everyone should own a pair of flat sandals that are delicate enough to wear with a sundress, casual enough to wear with jeans or shorts, and have straps to stay on your feet. Slide-on sandals, which are more like flat mules, are too impractical because they fall off and are ultimately not very walkable. These sandals should be versatile enough to wear with a dress to dinner, and simple enough for the beach.
