I can't be the only one on Vingle that has a little bit of an obsession when it comes to taking vitamins and supplements. Whether it's Flax Oil or Vitamin D, Calcium or B12, I'm constantly adding a different vitamin to my daily regimen. (My mother was a dietician. I blame this all on her.)
So whenever I'm on the hunt for a new bottle of vitamins, there's always bound to be those gummy multivitamins for adults, which are both awesome (because it's gummy vitamins) and not-so-awesome (the inevitable use of gelatin always harshes my proverbial mellow).
However, look no further. Today, I came across the most epic DIY tutorial for how to make your own (vegan!) gummy vitamins at home. Using plant-based agar-agar instead of gelatin, they gel up just as well, so now we ALL can eat them!
Try the following recipe with a decorative chocolate mold (the cuter the shapes, the better!) and powder or liquid-based supplement of your choice.
Homemade Vegan Gummy Vitamins
(From Healthy Mama)
MAKES ABOUT 20 PIECES
1/2 cup smoothie or juice (This will be the flavor of your vitamins, so choose wisely!)
3 tablespoons agar-agar flakes (I usually buy packets of agar-agar from my local Asian grocery store, but you can also probably easily find it online. It's really inexpensive!)
1 - 2 drops stevia
Liquid or powdered vitamins and/or whole foods-based supplements (Try not to use probiotics as the heat of the cooking process would probably make it less effective.)
1) In a small pot, combine agar-agar with the juice or the smoothie. Let stand for 5 minutes.
2) Put the pot on medium heat and cook, stirring, until agar-agar dissolves, which will take around 1 - 2 minutes.
3) Mix in the stevia and any supplements you are using, then carefully pour the liquid into molds.
4) Place in the freezer for a few minutes to allow the molds to set, then remove and take gummy vitamins out of the molds.
