Gucci Mane has his flaws, but he is a successful business man. The Atlanta native has an undeniable eye for talent, as he was a pivotal force behind Waka Flocka, Nicki Minaj, Young Thug and more. Outside of music, Gucci has made some poor life choices, some of which have spilled into his music world. On December 3, 2013, Gucci Mane was charged in federal court with two counts of possessing a firearm as a felon. On May 13, 2014, Gucci Mane plead guilty to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He agreed to a plea deal which will result in him being in prison until late 2016.
Despite his inability to perform new music due to his jail sentence, Gucci has remained relevant by releasing unreleased content. He has worked on building his relationship with his fans and media by apologizing for past harsh statements.
Two days ago, XXL Magazine announced a joint column with the Atlanta native titled “Ask Gucci.” The column will be running weekly and will focus on life advice coming directly from Big Guwop himself. The column will revolve around Gucci answering questions from fans.
There are so many reasons this can go bad from a PR standpoint from Gucci if this isn’t handled properly. For starters, interaction with the press on this high of a level this often can be dangerous if the wrong thing is said. One poor response to a question could be dragged on for weeks by press and fans.
Gucci also doesn’t have the best history in the past in regards to interaction with fans, press and fellow rappers. In September 2013, Gucci Mane sent a series of derogatory tweets to various figures of the hip-hop industry; Drake, 2 Chainz, Eminem, Young Jeezy, T.I., Yo Gotti, Waka Flocka Flame, Nicki Minaj, Migos, Rocko and others. In the tweets he claimed to have sexual relations with rappers' girlfriends. A couple days later, Gucci stated his Twitter account had been hacked, which may be true.
It may be best for Gucci to just continue to release music and do select interviews until he comes home from jail. Things are going so well, why risk it all over a weekly column?
