Using Tear Gas At Hot 97 Summer Jam On Fans Is Unacceptable
There were many reasons for hip-hop fans to celebrate at Hot 97’s Summer Jam, but the riots outside the stadium weren't one of them.
Mid way through the festivities, fans were stalled at the door while attempting to enter the stadium. Reports say that a mob of individuals tried to rush the entrance and police had to step in. The incident escalated when the police reportedly teargassed the crowd.
As a result of the incident, many guests who paid for tickets weren't allowed entry into the stadium. Hot 97 went to social media to announce that for all SJ tickets were not scanned, refunds will be offered at point of purchase.
A Spokesperson at Emmis New York sent in the following statement to XXL Magazine earlier today:
Due to strong demand for tickets for Summer Jam 2015, the show sold out early this evening. When fans realized tickets were not available at the box office, a small number of people created an unsafe environment, and for the safety of all guests, the New Jersey State Police were on scene to disperse the crowd. The gates were closed at that time. No further entry was permitted into the event. For ticket holders whose tickets were not scanned, refunds will be offered at the point of purchase.
It is pretty embarrassing that this situation couldn’t be handled without teargassing fans. This incident is brand diminishing for Hot 97 as well, as fans many fans who paid for advance tickets weren’t allowed to enter the show. Hopefully this isn’t the first of many riots at hip-hop festivals this summer.
