Chris Brown can rap. No really, he’s actually pretty good. While many have become familiar to Breezy due to his extensive catalog of r&b hits, the VA native has also dabbled in the rap world.
We were first introduced to Chris Brown as a rapper in 2011 with his mixtape “Boy In Detention.” The mixtape held collabs with Wiz Khalifa, Big K.R.I.T. and Justin Bieber (who delivers an impressive rap verse as well.) I was surprised with how poised he was on the tape in regards to his flow. His tempo was on point throughout with his bars. I was also very impressed with how in tune his ear for production was on his first effort. Brown enlisted the services of 9th Wonder, Hudson Mohawke, Mike Will and more. While the tape didn’t deliver a hit single, the tape was a good listen from beginning to end.
I think the big challenge for the VA native is to transition from making mixtapes that are a sweep of artistry to in-depth themed bodies of work. For people to take him very serious in the rap world, we will need more lyrical nourishment on the next project. I know Brown is capable of this, as he displays this on each album he has dropped (his debut album is probably one of my favorite albums ever.)
Hopefully we get a rap mixtape from Chris Brown soon. What do you think of his rap skills?
