Kitchen Stories, a fresh, lovely cooking app from a Berlin-based startup, is about to become your new cooking essential. The Apple App Store put it on their Best of 2014 list, and with good reason. I believe it’s well on its way to becoming the best recipe app out there – and here’s why.
Curated recipes, tested by chefs: Instead of having to sift through tons of recipes looking for the perfect combination of deliciously gourmet, quick-and-easy to prepare, and affordably simple, Kitchen Stories provides you with a rich selection of recipes where each one is a gem in its own right. From weeknight dinners to party-worthy desserts, you’ll find what you’re looking for – and fast.
Mobile inspiration: Like I somehow always manage to do, I was in my favorite organic co-op épicerie yet again without a shopping list or the slightest clue what I wanted to cook for dinner. I paused in front of the pamplemousses and whipped out my phone. After browsing Kitchen Stories for maybe 30 seconds, I found a delicious (and easy!) seeming recipe for One-Pot Pasta with spinach, tomatoes, and fresh basil and thyme. Within 10 minutes, I was heading home with ingredients in hand, and on top of that, a bottle of the suggested wine pairing (which turned out to be astoundingly perfect). Simply put, the app is easy-to-use and well-designed, making on-the-go inspiration a breeze.
It’s better than a cookbook (and better than sites like Kitchen Stories teaches you how to cook while offering incredibly doable step-by-step recipes. Educational videos teach inexperienced cooks the basics, such as how to chop an onion, and how to mince garlic. With every recipe you make, your knowledge grows. Plus, each recipe contains a Wine Tip that suggests a bottle, a year, and tells you why the pairing works. For me, an aspiring foodie and clueless (but enthusiastic!) wine-lover, this feature is a dream come true.
Gorgeous, image-centric design: Every recipe is accompanied by beautiful photos that lovingly guide you through every step. The clean and simple design makes this app a delight to use, whether you’re getting busy in the kitchen, or just scrolling and drooling.
Awesome features: One of my favorite features is that the app allows you to make personal notes on individual recipes. I noted, for example, that next time, I’d like to try adding a touch of white wine to my One-Pot Pasta sauce. In addition, favoriting recipes is super easy – just touch the little heart button. Built-in timer, shopping list, and measurement conversion features bring the app even closer to kitchen perfection. Plus, ingredient quantities are automatically adjusted according to the number of servings you’d like to make. Swoon.
Kitchen Stories is still in beta, but that doesn’t stop it from being a compelling app and absolutely worth a try. Plus, it’s free (so now you have to download it). Although it’s pretty much fully functional even without a membership, you can request to join the Kitchen Stories community through the app (it took only about a week for me to be added). As a registered member, you can create cookbooks, which allow you to save organize your favorite recipes at will. All in all, I give this app a big thumbs up and can’t recommend it enough. It's available now for iPhone or iPad download on the Apple App Store if you're interested. And if there are other cooking/food/recipe apps you enjoy, I'd love to hear about them! I'm always looking to streamline my cooking process. Thanks for reading this long review, folks, and happy cooking!
