In case you haven’t noticed there has been a lot of sunshine, schoolchildren acting way too excited, and the general discussion of going camping or to the beach...That’s right. It’s summertime. Summertime is the time for grilling, and what better ingredient to switch it up than coffee.
Using the barbecue can only mean two things: BBQ sauce, dry rub, marinade...AMIRIGHT?
Here are some of these grill-companions and their new favorite ingredient, coffee.

Coffee BBQ sauce

BBQ sauce is like the BFF of grilling. It’s tangy, wonderful, saucy, and loveable BFF. This spicy coffee barbecue sauce is going to be YOUR new best friend.
Adapted from
1/2 cup brewed coffee (Strong)
1 cup ketchup
3/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
1/2 cup shallots (Finely Chopped)
1/2 cup chili sauce (Sweet Red)
2 cloves garlic (Grated)
2 tbsps soy sauce
2 tbsps ground cumin
2 tbsps chili powder
1 tsp Sriracha (Or Tabasco Sauce)
Measure out ingredients and combine in a large saucepan, turn heat on medium. Mix it up well… And allow it to come to a boil. Then reduce to a simmer to cook for about 40 minutes or so. As it cooks, it will bubble and thicken. When it get’s to the perfect BBQ consistency, remove from heat and let it sit until it reaches room temperature.

Coffee Java Dry Rub

Rubs are great. It’s just a bunch of dry ingredients mixed together and slapped onto meat...simple right? This coffee rub goes on any meat, and it’s a fantastic way to spice up and give that steak a punch.

6 T Ground Coffee
2 T Coarse Salt
2 T Paprika
2 T Brown Sugar
2 T Coarse Pepper
2 t Onion Powder
2 t Garlic Powder
1 t Coriander
Add all ingredients in a bowl and whisk until it’s evenly mixed. Easy peasy.

Coffee Marinade

Marinades are great for two reasons: they enhance the flavor and they tenderize the meat. So it’s pretty much a must-have for grilling. This sultry peanut coffee marinade is a perfect companion to any meat. Want my recommendation? Try it on steak.
Adapted from SheKnows
2 tablespoons crushed peanuts
6 tablespoons butter
1 medium onion, chopped
4 garlic cloves, minced
1 cup strong brewed coffee
1 cup peanut sauce
2 tablespoons white vinegar
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
Meat of choice
1. Saute peanuts in butter for 20 seconds. Add onion and garlic and saute 1 to 2 minutes.
2. Combine coffee with peanut sauce, vinegar, Worcestershire, and peanut mixture in a bowl.
3. Place meat in a bowl and pour half the marinade over it. Saving the rest for cooking. Chill and let marinate for 6 to 8 hours or overnight, flipping a few times.
4. When ready to serve, preheat grill to medium-high heat. Remove meat from marinade and place it on grill. Cook, marinating often, until desired degree of doneness. Let rest before cutting.
Serve these yummy grilled meats to your friends, and they’ll be all, “Hey what’s your secret?” And watch their jaws drop as you admit to them that the secret ingredient is actually their favorite caffeinated beverage. COFFEE.
Wow, I've heard of using cola, but never coffee. I'm REALLY intrigued. I wonder if the caffeine still wakes you up though!
my favorite BBQ spot in St. Louis has a coffee sauce that is just. the most wonderful thing. i made the mistake of only bringing home one bottle for the summer... unlikely that it lasts me.
I love coffee, meat, and bbq...ooohmygod I am so excited for this
I’ve used cola too @danidee and I really enjoy the flavor! The caffeine and the grill fire...All of these are components that will wake you up.
The dry rub sounds like it probably retains the coffee flavor the most!
