Sons of Anarchy is a totally binge-worthy show, I know, because I've been hooked to it all summer. Jax Teller and his band of outlaw bikers can impart some wisdom on anyone, outlaw or not.

"A true outlaw finds the balance between the passion in his heart and the reason in his mind. The outcome is the balance of might and right."

John Teller, is the late great leader of the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club. His wisdom is ever present throughout the series. His outlaw nature is pure. Going beyond the rules isn't always a bad thing. The only thing that keeps us on the side of good is balance.
When we run out of options and are thrown into chaos, our balance is the first to go. Take it from John, in order to keep things solid, you must weigh your need for chaos and that chaos itself equally.

"I'm tired of being crushed by the weight of men that believe in nothing, I have to change that."

We often feel the most lost when we're following someone else. If you are going down a path you didn't anticipate, because someone else is leading you; it's time to reevaluate. We must follow our own instincts. It's great to get guidance and advice from others, but when it comes down to the bare bones, it's all about you. Your life, your choices. Nothing more, nothing less.

"We don't know who we are until we're connected to someone. We're just better human beings when we are with the person we are supposed to be with."

Now, this may seem like it's in direct opposition of the previous quote, but it's completely different. Being connected to people, whether it's family or a significant other, gives us purpose. We must be loyal to those who made us, and create a long lasting relationship with those who deserve our time.

"There's an old saying: That which doesn't kill you, makes you stronger. I don't believe that. I think the things that try to kill you make you angry and sad. Strength comes from the good things--your family, your friends, the satisfaction of hard work. Those are the things that keep you whole. Those are the things to hold on to when you're broken."

We have to find the positives despite our situation. The Sons of Anarchy endure a lot of hardship over their 7 seasons. Most of us won't face the atrocities depicted in the show, but we all have our own private struggles. We have to put stock in the things that make us happy, the important things that Jax Teller talks about in this particular quote. Instead of turning to violence or vices we have to look toward the important things.
When things don't go our way for a while, we become cold. We start to shut out all of the things that make us human. We all enter into toxic friendships and relationships when they're innocent and productive. The key is to avoid what John Teller is talking about here. We aren't just pluses and minuses. We don't keep friends for profit gains. We keep them because they are important to us. No matter what happens to us, we can't lose sight of the truly important things, like our friends and family. Without them we are nothing.
