Musical theater attracts some hardcore nerds. It's awesome.
You know what's even awesome-er? When those nerds combine their love for fandom with their talent for showtunes. Add some singing and campy fun to the world of Harry Potter and voila! Something magical happens.
With fandom becoming so accesibile, I'm sure more of these fan-made productions will start appearing. In the meantime, here are a few amazing ones to help you get your fix...
A Very Potter Musical
One of the most famous fandom musicals (no doubt because the fan base is so enormous), AVPM was first performed in 2009, and the songs are still stuck in my head. Since the music and lyrics were written by Glee's Darren Criss, that should be no surprise. Here's a clip of the opening sequence. Beware: it's really catchy.
50 Shades: The Musical Parody
Get nasty! This musical explores the... fascinating 50 shades phenomenon. It's full of goofy gags and hilarious dance numbers. Of course, the show is laughing with fans, not at them!
This group lovingly parodies the plot holes, confusing costumes, and bizarre aesthetic of the video game series Kingdom Hearts. Their other projects have lampooned anime and zombies, so they clearly know their fandoms.
Fellowship! The Lord of the Rings Parody Musical
There is an official Lord of the Rings Musical. It is terrible. This production from L.A. is hilarious. It's campy and catchy and crafted with love for the original media.
Honorable mention should go to Vampire Cowboys' production of Geek. It's not a musical, but it's a fight choreography drama that anime fans will find extremely relateable.
So now that you know what a giant nerd I am, do you have a favorite? I feel like there's a really good one I'm missing. Or maybe there's a production in the works that I don't know about yet?
