Step aside baby boomers...there’s a new cool generation in town. And they look and act a lot differently then you’d expect. The population is shifting, changing, and the United States is becoming more diverse. Today, the population estimates released by the Census Bureau reflected on those changes and look into the future to predict some pretty big shifts in our country.
Reflecting these younger age groups, the population as a whole has become more racially and ethnically diverse in just the last decade, with the percentage minority climbing from 32.9 percent in 2004 to 37.9 percent in 2014.
Also among the data shown is an increase in the millennial generation (represent!).
America’s youth born between 1982 and 2000, now number 83.1 million and represent more than one quarter of the nation’s population. Their size exceeds that of the 75.4 million baby boomers, according to new U.S. Census Bureau estimates released today. Overall, millennials are more diverse than the generations that preceded them, with 44.2 percent being part of a minority race or ethnic group (that is, a group other than non-Hispanic, single-race white).
So, there are a lot of us. We are getting more diverse then ever. And now we are entering the workforce. Time to take over the world? I think so.
But what would the millennial world takeover look like? Let me tell you! In a Pew Research study, it found that millennials are doing some things a bit differently.
We are driving less and would rather live in walkable, bikeable neighborhoods.
We are the first to qualify as “digital natives,” many of us born with tablets and smartphones at our fingertips.
Having been disproportionately affected by the recession, facing unemployment and underemployment, yet they we are optimistic about the future.
And we celebrate diversity!
It should be an interesting coming of years with a lot of change. More changes are sure to come as the rest of our generation TAKES OVER THE WORLD.
