American Ballet Theater names its first black female principal dancer
FINALLY! The American Ballet Theater announced today that Misty Copeland has been promoted to principal dancer in the company, the first black female dancer to do so in American Ballet Theater History. It took damn long enough!
I'm a dancer myself (nowhere as talented as Misty Copeland) and I have long looked to Misty Copeland as my dance inspiration. She came from a poor family and didn't start dancing until she was 13 years old, which is a very late start for dancers. She was told by many ballet teachers that she just didn't have the body for ballet. And she proved them all wrong.
She burst into mainstream culture with her Under Armour ad.
She then appeared in Time as one of the 100 most influential people.
