From Kansas, Missouri, Misty Copeland is only 32 years old, and she is one the most successful ballet dancers in the world. On June 30th, 2015, she was just promoted as principal dancer at American Ballet theatre. You go girl!
Misty also became the first African-American woman to be named a principal in the 75-year history of American Ballet Theater. This is a very important accomplishment, as Black women and men are extremely underrepresented in ballet.
According to an interview with NPR, Misty talked about her struggle as a black woman in ballet. Her aesthetics just didn't fit in, and critics questioned her body type. Critics would say that African-American body types are too muscular, or not lean enough. But she finally pushed through, and made history.

"This has been my dream since I was 13, to be a principal dancer and reach these heights."

"But it hasn't been overnight," she added at a hastily arranged news conference — a rarity for a ballet promotion.

"It's been 14 years of extremely hard work. I'm just so extremely honored to be an African-American and to be in this position."

She's amazing & gorgeous! History in the making. GO MISTY!
She is a beautiful person and a great role model to younger girls.
@alywoah I believe that it was the obstacles she had to overcome that makes her story really really great. may we overcome all our obstacles.
Yes, for sure! I am so inspired by her. She really pushed through, even when there was so many things holding her back. @Priscilla
This story makes me so happy. I watched a documentary featuring Misty and she such a down to earth and cool person. Props to her for working her butt off! She deserves this!
