Misty Copeland is Broadway Bound
Today it was announced that ballerina Misty Copeland will be joining Broadway's cast of “On the Town.” After becoming the first African-American woman to be named a principal dancer with American Ballet Theater, Misty is killing it this week.
On the Town is a high-energy show full of fun characters and dancing. It’s the perfect fit for the stunning and spunky Misty.
Previously, I wrote about On the Town and Broadway’s lack of exposure for dancers on Broadway. It seems that Broadway often neglects the dancers with more of a focus on singing and acting...This could be a turning point.
I think having Misty Copeland on the stage will not only give more exposure to dancers on Broadway, I think it will lead some dance lovers to enjoy the theatre. A win-win situation for the arts community.
What does this mean for Misty? A whole new expansion of her character. The role she will be playing is the female lead, and is currently played by Megan Fairchild. While her character does not sing very much, the role is given the opportunity to dance and act. Something completely new and exciting for her career.
Ms. Copeland told the NY Times she was talking about acting with her friend Taye Diggs, and he had told her that after seeing all the acting she did while dancing the role of Juliet last month, he did not think she had anything to worry about. “He said, ‘I think you’ve got this,’ ” she said.
My sentiments exactly! Misty, you got this.
