It's not worth anyone's time to compare tragedies and try to weigh their influence, but what we can say is that there have been few more crushing deaths in the music world in the 21st century than that of Elliott Smith.
Today's Lyric of the Day comes from his song, "Between the Bars."
"People you've been before
That you don't want around anymore
That push and shove and bend to your will
I'll keep them still"
What voice could be as sweet and natural as Elliott Smith's?
Elliott Smith died in 2003. After an argument with his girlfriend, Smith stabbed himself twice in the chest. He left a simple note:
"I'm so sorry--love, Elliott. God forgive me."
When we say, "Only the good die young," this is the kind of story we refer to. A documentary film was released last year that investigates Smith's life, music, and death, and it comes with the perfect name: Heaven Adores You.
Elliott Smith is one of those artists that, you know, really capture an emotion or a feeling so well. And I think that, like, a lot of singer/songwriters try to do the same thing but there's something about Smith that lets us in so easily while others seem... Fake? I don't know if that's the right way to put it. But yes, Elliott Smith all day, man.
Also, Elliott Smith is pretty high on my list when it comes to songs to nap to. I always used to turn on Pandora's Elliott Smith Radio when I needed something meditative to nod off to.
@danidee you're spot on. i think vulnerability plays a big role in defining his music - he totally throws himself out there.
I love Elliott Smith too, and normally, I'm not so much of a acousticy singer-songwriter person. I think you're both right about his effortlessness. It must be hard to be expressive without coming off as contrived, but I feel like he'd always done it with a perfect melding of self-awareness and vulnerability.
Yes, totally those two definitely pop in my head whenever thinking about artists like Elliott Smith! Totally on the same page. 100% Forever, full success.
