A CUP OF JOE EVERY MORNING MAY LOWER MELANOMA RISK
Did you know your daily dose of coffee may offer special skin perks in addition to providing an overall pick-me-up? A cup of Joe every morning may protect against malignant melanoma, according to a 2015 study in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Overall, the subjects with the highest coffee intake had a lower risk of malignant melanoma. This isn’t the first time researchers have found a correlation between coffee and skin cancer risk. According to a study led by Harvard School of Public Health published in Cancer Research in July 2012, men and women who drink at least 3 cups of coffee a day were found to have a 20% lower risk of developing basal cell carcinoma than non-coffee drinkers. So what’s the takeaway (besides a steaming cup of brew)? While this is good news for coffee lovers, protecting your skin is more than just what you put in your to-go cup. And upping your coffee intake certainly doesn’t mean you can spend more time in the sun. Sunscreen still remains your safest bet for preventing skin cancer. Before you dash out the door, always apply a broad spectrum sunscreen, to your face, hands and other exposed areas of skin.S
