I Can't Believe It's Not ____!: Songs you didn't know were covers

Full disclosure: Neither butter nor its evil counterpart, I Can't Believe It's Not Butter!, have really anything to do with the rest of this card at all. But the name is just so damn catchy and malleable, so, forgive me.
Moving on, I'm here to give some love to the original composers and performers of songs that you may not know deserve credit. Sometimes, a song gets buried for years, only to be picked up by a totally different artist (often in a different genre and style), and it's the second version that blows up. In lots of these cases, there is little mention of the original.
Let's change that.

I Can't Believe It's Not LED ZEPPELIN!

Song: "Dazed and Confused" (1969)
Original: Jake Holmes (1967)
Eerily enough, Jake Holmes actually has some real Robert Plant qualities to his voice. Or maybe Plant ripped his vocal style off of Holmes just like he did one of his best songs. I don't know. Is nothing sacred?

I Can't Believe It's Not AMY WINEHOUSE!

Song: "Valerie" (2007)
Original: The Zutons (2006)
The Zutons are kind of a guilty pleasure of mine. They're a not-very-good mid-2000s Brit rock group, but something about the lead singer's voice is really appealing to me. Amy's version is damn-near perfect and is the basis of every A Capella group's top hit, but it wouldn't have been possible without The Zutons. Which is not something that you can say for many things in this world.

I Can't Believe It's Not ARETHA FRANKLIN!

Song: "Respect" (1967)
Original: Otis Redding (1965)
Ok, this one is legitimately surprising. I've heard the Otis version a million times and I didn't know that it was his song until recently. The two versions are really, really different, and each is awesome in its own right. It's hard to go wrong with Otis or Aretha. Everyone wins.

I Can't Believe It's Not THE BEATLES!

Song: "Twist and Shout" (1963)
Original: The Isley Brothers (1962)
The Isley Brothers didn't actually write this song - Phil Medley and Bert Burns did - but they were the first to chart the song, before The Beatles did a year later.
Fun fact: The Beatles recorded Please Please Me, the record that contains this hit, in just 10 hours. Their producer knew that "Twist and Shout" would totally ruin John Lennon's voice because of its demanding style, so he saved it for last, with just 15 minutes of scheduled recording time left. Indeed, it totally blew out Lennon's voice, and, while the producer wanted to do a second take, Lennon just couldn't manage it. Ended up fine, if you ask me.

I Can't Believe It's Not ELVIS PRESLEY!

Song: "Hound Dog" (1956)
Original: Big Mama Thornton (1952)
Oh man! OH MAN! Who is Big Mama Thornton, and where has she been? This woman is a force! She also recorded "Ball n' Chain" before Janis Joplin made it a hit. Give the lady some love! This version is fucking awesome!
But, yeah, Elvis's is better. Sorry Big Mama.
Which one surprises you the most?

Do you like the originals better, or the more popular covers?

Whoa! Great and informative article! Thanks!
@jeff4122 I am extremely jealous of your proximity to Chuck Berry. Definitely check out Rosetta Tharpe, she has a lot of raw passion in her music. It's cool to see how she influenced the King!
@shannonl5 chuck berry still plays once a month at a bar near my school. I haven't been yet but really need to make that happen because....well... he's old. and I don't know Rosetta Tharpe! will investigate
The last three actually shocked me!! Elvis, the Beatles, Aretha... it's hard to outdo those dudes. But I think the originals definitely deserve a bit more credit ;D
Oh wow I had no idea about any of these! The Otis Redding one surprised me the most I think. Lately I've been listening to a lot of Chuck Berry and Rosetta Tharpe because they were such a huge influence on Elvis. Clearly I need to investigate even more!

No Bake Elvis Presley Bars - Vegan & Gluten-Free!
Rock 'n' roll legend Elvis Presley isn't the only one who can appreciate the flavor combination of banana and peanut butter. Try these small no-bake dessert squares at home, served up with just enough chocolate to have yourself shouting, "Have mercy!" No Bake Elvis Bars (Makes 16 small squares) INGREDIENTS: For the Crust - 1.5 cup whole almonds 2 tablespoons coconut oil 2 tablespoons coconut nectar syrup (Brown rice syrup or maple syrup will work instead of coconut nectar.) 1 tablespoon almond butter or peanut butter 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon pinch of fine grain sea salt, to taste For the Middle Layer - 2 medium ripe bananas, peeled 1/4 cup coconut oil, softened slightly 2 tablespoons almond butter or peanut butter 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract pinch of fine grain sea salt, to taste For the Chocolate Drizzle - 3 tablespoons mini dark chocolate chips 1/2 tablespoon coconut oil DIRECTIONS: 1) Line an 8-inch square pan with two pieces of parchment paper, one going each way. This makes it easy to lift out the bars later on. 2) For the crust: Add the almonds into a food processor and process until a fine crumb forms, slightly larger than sand. Now add in the rest of the crust ingredients and process until the mixture comes together, scraping the side of the bowl as needed. The mixture should be a slightly tacky and should stick together when pressed with your fingers. If it's not, add a very small splash of water and process again for a few seconds. 3) Dump the crust mixture into the prepared pan. Smooth out evenly and then press down firmly and evenly into the pan. You can lightly wet your fingers if the crust sticks to them. Use a pastry roller to roll it very smooth, compacting it as much as possible. Place in freezer while you prepare the middle layer. 4) Middle layer: Give the processor bowl a quick rinse. Add all the middle layer ingredients into the processor and process until smooth. Remove the crust from the freezer and pour the middle layer on top. Smooth out. Return to the freezer for at least 1-1.5 hours to set, until the middle layer is very firm to the touch. 5) Chocolate drizzle: When the middle layer is completely solid, prepare the topping. In a small pot heat the chocolate and coconut oil on the lowest heat, stirring to combine. When half of the chips have melted, remove the pot from the heat and stir until completely melted. Remove the bars from the freezer. Lift slab out of the pan and slice into squares. Spread out the squares on a plate lined with parchment paper. Drizzle on the melted chocolate and return bars to the freezer until the chocolate is firm and the bars are solid. 7) Enjoy these bars frozen, straight from the freezer. They melt very quickly so I don't suggest leaving them out for more than a couple minutes. Wrap leftovers and store in the freezer.
6 John Lennon Quotes To Honor A True Revolutionary
Today marks the day that legendary John Lennon was murdered and @tessstevens wrote an amazing card honoring him that you can read here! John Lennon has been a staple in my house since I can remember. In fact, my Dad told me that on the day Lennon died he cried hysterically and since then has hated the book Catcher In The Rye (which was held by the shooter). It was very awkward when I had to read it in high school. But in honor of John Lennon, here are some of his most famous (yet still amazingly revenant) quotes that will live in infamy. This is my all time favorite quote. Because it really shouldn't matter what you are doing or where you are in life. As long as you are happy, then everything really is okay. "All you need is love" right? It might not work out, it might not be your only love, and it might not be the right love, but at any point in your life love is always a blessing. Speaking of love, they only way to find perfect, lasting love is to first find a way to be happy by yourself. Looking for happiness in another person will only leave you feeling empty. Bombs, beheadings, and blood are scattered across the screens. We look refugees fleeing war in the face and turn our backs. Yet god forbid someone posts a nipple on social media. Thank you John Lennon, for validating my existence and reminding everyone that being weird is what makes you special. And the words that will get me through any hard time, if I am not happy, it is not the end.
OLD SONGS WILL CATCH YOUR EARS
I love music. Yes, I do. That's all. My friends say songs that you hear define your age; for me it is more to era. My friends are about 10-15 years older than me, but I'm more to the songs that they hear in 80's or 90's than to the songs that my friends who are 10 years younger than me (read Katty Perry, Jessie J, Nicky Minaj, etc). Even, that 70's songs or less still catch my heart. My friends who are younger than me laugh at me when I play these songs or even know what the lyrics are and how to sing it. They will put me in the same taste with their parents'. It is fine and I don't mind. Why do I have to? These songs are everlasting. I will remember how my dad played the songs everytime we were in the car in our way to some place and we sang, my dad,my mom,and I. Everytime we were together he always played songs. Yes, he loved music as well. I have these 10 songs that are always in my mind. Of course I still have hundreds, but I just give us 10 songs that may take you back to a moment that probably the moment when you dated your wife or husband. A moment when you broke up with your lover, or maybe a moment like mine when you were just this 4,5,or 6 year little kid who loved the songs because your parents loved them. Here they are: 1. I'll remember you by Atlantic Starr 2. I don't have the heart to hurt you by James Ingram 3. Hard to say I'm sorry by Chicago 4. Just the way you are by Billy Joel 5. If you leave me now by Chicago 6. Till I find you again by Richard Marx 7. After all by Al Jarreau 8. After the love has gone by Earth, Wind, and Fire 9. Why goodbye by Peabo Bryson 10. Stuck on you by Lionel Richie Let's listen to them and tell me what do you feel?
7 Iconic Prince Songs To Remember His Legacy
Today we've lost a legend. At age 57, iconic pop star Prince has died. He was the voice behind "Purple Rain" and "Let's Go Crazy" singing pop hits to define the generation. Prince was a man of secrecy, pure exclusivity, and always stayed at a firm distance from his fans letting the music only speak for itself. Like the passings of Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston, Prince will go down in history as another pop legend who died too young. Prince passed away at 10:07 a.m. CT in his Paisley Park residence this morning. He was found unconscious in an elevator by a man whose name has yet to be released. The man called 911 at 9:43 a.m. and when paramedics arrived, they were unable to revive the legend after attempting CPR. Though cause of death originally claimed to be from a severe flu, new information is slowly pointing to a drug overdose. There are no signs of fowl play. "The person is dead here. ... And the people are just distraught," the man told the police dispatcher. Prince's autopsy is set for Friday. Below I have provided a list of 7 of Prince's greatest hits and the iconic lyrics from each: 1. Purple Rain I never meant to cause you any sorrow I never meant to cause you any pain I only wanted one time to see you laughing I only want to see you laughing in the purple rain. 2. Let's Go Crazy Instead of asking him how much of your time is left Ask him how much of your mind, baby 'Cause in this life Things are much harder than in the after world In this life You're on your own. 3. When Doves Cry This is what it sounds like When doves cry. 4. Kiss You don't have to be rich To be my girl You don't have to be cool To rule my world Ain't no particular sign I'm more compatible with I just want your extra time and your Kiss. 5. Raspberry Beret She wore a Raspberry beret The kind you find in a second hand store Raspberry beret And if it was warm she wouldn't wear much more Raspberry beret I think I love her. 6. Little Red Corvette Little red Corvette Baby you're much too fast. 7. 1999 I was dreamin' when I wrote this So sue me if I go 2 fast But life is just a party, and parties weren't meant 2 last War is all around us, my mind says prepare 2 fight So if I gotta die I'm gonna listen 2 my body tonight Yeah, they say two thousand zero zero party over, Oops out of time So tonight I'm gonna party like it's 1999.
5 Lyrics That'll Make You Think Twice About Giving Up On Love
Music is often a direct link to the soul, and I know of a lot of lyrics that have made me think twice about giving up on love. I've been so disheartened by people, and situations in the past, that I have strongly considered just living a life of solitude. But you know what, that's a childish way to deal with your emotions. As I get older, I'm starting to realize that human interaction is way more important than I used to think it was. Life isn't about the things you have, it's about the people you share it with. It's about the love you cultivate. Yes things get hard, and the road can be long to finding happiness, but you know what, if it's worth it...the right person will come. So sit back and read some of my favorite lyrics. They inspire me every day to try and keep going. 1. “Stand up beside the fireplace/ take that look from off your face/ You ain’t ever gonna burn my heart out.” - Oasis / Don't Look Back In Anger If we can admit to ourselves that we can stay strong despite the things that happen to us in love, or otherwise, we can open ourselves up to new, better relationships right? We can't let anyone take our power. Love isn't about that, it's about sharing the power, and growing together. 2. "You say your heart ain't ever been broken / you think you know where you're going. You say this life hasn't given you nothin'/ you've got another thing coming." - The Killers / Tidal Wave If you haven't been in a relationship, and you don't think you know anything about love, and don't want to...it's easy to get jaded, but don't give up. Because somewhere out there is the perfect person to teach you all you need to know. 3. "Darkness comes and I will/ Sing you a song / I will love you forever / Or at least till morning comes." - Lady Don't You Fall Backwards / Peter Doherty Sometimes love is temporary, but that's what makes it exciting. There is finite time for some of us with others. It's just a part of the exquisite pain of being in love and dealing with falling out of it. 4. "I'm in love for the first time/ Don't you know it's gonna last?/ It's a love that lasts forever/ It's a love that had no past." - Don't Let Me Down / The Beatles We often put a lot of pressure on our relationships, we think they'll end in marriage or commitment of another kind, but you know what, that's not always the case. But that's no reason to give up on love. The nature of it is wonderful because for the moment, if we're in love, we have that feeling forever, whether the person leaves or not. There's something eternal about it. 5. "You are what you love / not who loves you." Fall Out Boy - Save Rock and Roll We all must remember though, that love isn't always about people. Sometimes it's about the things we love, our passions and hobbies. Sometimes it's about our families. Remember: Love does not have a definition or an expectation. It merely exists in the people we spend time with and the interests we hold dear.
Mac Sabbath: The McDonald's Metal Band Of Your Nightmares
Just when you thought Ronald McDonald was as scary as clowns got, in comes Ronald Osbourne. From the poofy red wig and the yellow gloves, he's got all the fast food joint's iconic colors in place; however, something sinister boils beneath the surface. This is Mac Sabbath, a Black Sabbath cover band that combines all things Prince of Darkness with ketchup, mayo, and the occasional sweet and sour dipping sauce. And in this gig, Ronald Osbourne is the fast food world's Prince of Darkness equivalent. Needless to say, you should be scared. Very scared. And instead of 'Iron Man', their signature song is 'Frying Pan', which equal parts mocks the quality of fast food and the health of the people who eat it a little too frequently. Oh, and you've got to see Ronald's bandmates. There's Slayer MacCheeze, Grimalice, and Catburglar, who looks a whole lot like Peter Criss from the original KISS line-up. And just like the original Black Sabbath, Ronald and the crew are just as notorious for their extreme stage antics. After attending their concert last summer, music journalist Jake Manson observed a move pulled right out of the Ozzy Osbourne handbook: "The highlight came when Ronald reached into his takeout bag, pulled out a hamburger with bat wings, and took a massive bite out of it." So what do you guys think about Mac Sabbath? Have you seen any clown rock this hard? Let me know if you'd be down to see Mac Sabbath live in concert in the comments below, and for more WTF news, follow my WTF Street Journal collection.
