What happens when things don't go according to plan? Here are 6 ways to deal with adjusting your schedule, and how to roll with the punches.
1. Never assume something is set in stone.
The only concrete thing is that things change! So the first step to adjusting your schedule gracefully is taking a breath and making sure you don't freak out.
2. Seriously, don't freak out.
The biggest mistake you can make when you encounter a change is to freak out. You're not going to get anything done if you're harried and worried. Just sit down, breathe and consider the changes you need to make.
3. If an event gets cancelled or doesn't go as planned, there's probably a reason behind it.
I like to think that there's a reason for everything. If something doesn't go your way, you have to adjust. It's just the way of the world.
4. Consider your options.
Your day must go on, so when something gets derailed you have to consider what can replace the thing that didn't go as planned. Even if you don't have a contingency, consider other events in the area, related ones or alternatives when you sit down to figure things out.
5. Avoid thinking of an adjustment as a failure.
If we miss a meeting, get somewhere too late or just underestimate the time it takes to travel, one thing has to be clear, it's not a failure! Misstepping is a part of life. Everyone has to adjust to their circumstances, and if reconsidering or rescheduling something is the worst part of your day then you're getting along pretty good.
6. Move on!
The next part of your plan is always an option, use your newfound time as an excuse to explore or create. Make the best of a bad situation not by getting mad, but by getting ahead! Use your time wisely and understand that the little detours we take make life interesting!
