Dark Places is a gripping and intense thriller that will be coming out later this summer. And after watching the trailer, my excitement for the movie is at an all-time high. Going in, I didn't think I would be grabbed or intrigued by the trailer at all and the reason it works so well is because the film explores the truth by showcasing both past and present.
From the start, the trailer starts out with a piece of the main character's (Charlize Theron) past. The narrative of the movie rests on the event that took place in her childhood and how it relates to her now. But as the trailer goes on, it tells us more about what happened or didn't happen (it doesn't say too much, though). There's even in a moment from Nicholas Hoult's character where he says that "everyone lies".
Even though the movie's narrative revolves around a murder mystery it also explores the truth in a really interesting way. Sometimes we remember the past the way we want to instead of the way it happened and it looks like that Dark Places will highlight that by cross-cutting between the character's past and present throughout the film. I can only hope that the full feature delivers on this idea.
Dark Places will be in theaters on August 7th, 2015.
