Are you the kind of person that needs to have everything planned ahead of time to be able to function? Especially when it comes to big things like school or career? I know I used to be.
What if the plan changes? Drastically? It probably seems like the end of the world. It's not.
I had to learn this the hard way. In fact, it took me two years to realize this, but I'm glad I did. It started out with my plan to enter the medical field. I had a big, detailed plan of classes, organizations and activities that I would need to pursue to stay on the path. And I followed the plan strictly. I had the next four years of school planned in a word document and it would lead me to my goal.
After a year, however, I realized this was not the path for me. I did not enjoy the classes or the hands-on experience I was getting in the medical field. But...I still had the plan. A 4 year plan. I couldn't just abandon the entire plan. That's crazy! Or at least that's what I thought.

Luckily, I made a friend at that same time who would eventually become my mentor and she was able to help me stray away from my planned-out path. It was hard to do at first. Not looking at that plan every month to check on my progress was difficult. But in order to try new things and find my passion I had to let go of that plan. And once I let go of it, pursuing my new interests became much easier. And things turned out for the best. I had so many doubts about changing directions, but I did a complete 360 from medicine and started pursuing a career in marketing. And actually ended up at an awesome start-up this summer!

I think that's what most people struggle with. Not letting go of the old goal, but letting of that old plan. It makes sense as well. A lot of time and energy go into plans. It's an investment. But it's important to know when to let go and move on to new things. Regardless of how daunting they might seem. Did you ever let go of an old plan?

This Joseph Campbell quote reminded me of my own story about accepting a new path. So just let go of that planned path that isn't working out and embrace better things that are waiting for you!

Thankyou for sharing your experience. Its nice to know that you can let go and have a happy ending. I plan everything out and I admit its hard to toss it to the wind, but I think with somethings I need to desperately.
@2littlelegs It took some time to realize it but it's perfectly fine to change plans haha. And I'm sure you can do it when you need to. It just takes some time to think through and figure it all out ^_^
