Are You In A Funk? Try to Adjust
Adjustment is defined as: the process of adapting or becoming used to a new situation.
Adjustments are hard. By definition they are designed to make us change, morph, fix things. When we are forced to change, sometimes life can get uncomfortable. And the AfterLife is all about change.
Something like moving away, taking a new job, or ending a relationship can force change upon us.When we're dealing with a "new situation" as the definition suggests, we can fall into a valley, or a lull. These types of things can masquerade as bouts of depression.
Not knowing many people, or leaving friends can take a toll on you, no matter how strong or independent you are.
Half the battle is getting over the feelings of shame you have for not being as "badass" or as "wild" as your reputation suggests.
I haven't had one night out in New York since I've been her, and I think it may be because I'm actually scared to meet new people. I'm scared to put myself out there, and since the getting stood up debacle, things don't seem as easy anymore.
When we get burned how do we heal?
I've reached the point where I am where I want to be, but something still isn't right. I'm not sure what that is yet, and I guess that's okay.
Taking things in stride doesn't happen overnight. There's a process to it. You end up feeling pretty bad, then not as bad, and then, well you get over it.
But getting over it doesn't mean forgetting.
Dealing with life is a constant adjustment.
There are a million inspirational quotes that will tell you to get of the bench, play the game...whatever. But how easy is that? If your main priority is work and trying to make a place for yourself in the world, how can "fun" even be an afterthought?
Life is a balance, right? If it's unbalanced, then we have to do something to adjust it.
Back to adjustments again, huh.
People are always telling you to adjust, but not how to. That seems to be a common theme after college, or after you move out. Everyone knows what you need...to do, but not how to do it.
I've probably said that sentence a million times.
How do I do this? Why am I changing? Is change good?
Nobody can know, but when you're up against it, you just figure it out.
I guess when you find yourself watching 30 Rock in your room every night, going to sleep earlier than your parents, you might need to make a change.
There's nothing wrong with being a homebody, or just being alone, but when it starts to make you reevaluate your entire existence, it's time for a change.
It's time to adjust. Even though the word can seem like a curse, it's always waiting for you when things get old.
Even if you're not ready.
