MBC Strike: What This Means for Kpop Fans
MBC is finally going on strike which is completely not normal for Korea. As you probably know, the working culture in Korea is insane, especially in the entertainment industry where everyone involved (not just the actors) often work 20-23 hours a day. There have recently been un uptick in suicides by writers and producers because of the immense stress put on them. MBC is also known here in Korea to be under the control of bigger powers, such as the old president who was impeached. Rather than sharing the real news, the anchors were forced to spin stories to be positive for the president and to support her because the owners of the station were being put under pressure by the corrupt government. Basically MBC is just bad news, and the workers are sick of it. As of this week, the workers have all stopped coming to work meaning unless something was previously recorded, there will be no news, no radio, no dramas, no nothing, until they get what they want (way better working conditions and probably a way better CEO) Because of this, it looks like a music festival has been cancelled as well. BTS V and Twice Dahyun were going to host it and its line up would have included BTS, TWICE, Red Velvet, B1A4, BTOB, Teen Top, B.A.P, MAMAMOO, GFRIEND, BLACKPINK, iKON, EXID, NU’EST W, Lovelyz, ASTRO, and PRISTIN. To be honest, I don't really care that this was cancelled, as I'd much rather have thousands of people's lives improved than watch a few groups perform one or two songs each that we've already heard before. I'm sad if this was anyone's one chance to see these groups live (like if they were vacationing to korea) but in the long run I think it will help a lot more people than it will inconvenience. Here's to hoping the working conditions of people behind the shows we love so much improve greatly <3
Fantasy K-Drama Couples!
If the chemistry is not right in a kdrama, the romance is not going to work. When watching a mismatched kdrama couple, it's tempting to think which actor you might have cast instead. Why did they choose that actress and not the other obvious choice? Sometimes actors are cast for their star power, sometimes because the scriptwriter asked for them. Occasionally, a couple is cast because they look good together, but when acting, they lack that spark. You can never tell what will work out on screen. But it is fun to imagine who might be great together. Here are a few kdrama couples that could really work: Yoon Eun Hye and Ok Taecyeon: They did a beer commercial together and looked great as the idol manager and detective. They both have the same intense good looks. She's four years older than him, but why should a few years matter when you're casting a drama? Yoon Eun Hye looked great with all her drama co-stars. She made a great couple with Gong Yoo in "Coffee Prince," Joo Ji Hoon in "Princess Hours," Woon Sang Hyun in "My Fair Lady," Kang Ji Hwan in "Lie to Me," and Park Yoo Chun in "Missing You." She even had a short cameo appearance as the former girlfriend of Lee Min Ho in "Personal Taste." Taecyeon has not had that many small screen girlfriends, only Suzy in "Dream High" and almost Moon Geun Young in "Cinderella's Sister," but Yoon Eun Hye could show him how it's done. Next suggestion is Kim Sun Ah and Jung Il Woo. Okay, he's 25 and she is 37, but she starred with Lee Jang Woo in "I Do, I Do" and he is 26. There must be some way she could be in the same drama with Jung Il Woo. She has romanced Hyun Bin in "My Lovely Kim Sam Soon" and Lee Dong Wook in "Scent of a Woman." Jung Il Woo has been matched up with Lee Chung Ah in "Flower Boy Ramen Shop," longed for Han Ga In in "The Moon Embracing The Sun" and lost Nam Gyu Ri in "49 Days." Please, kdrama producers, make this happen. And finally, how about Suzy Bae and Lee Min Ho? After she finishes fighting her way through "Gu Family Book," she could become Lee Min Ho's sidekick in another "City Hunter" type action drama. She's 18 and he is 25, but she is pretty tough. She stuck it out in that tough performing arts high school in "Dream High" and held her own in "Big." She has enough spirit to defeat the most arrogant character he could play. Goo Jun Pyo, beware. So far, he has been matched up with Son Je Jin in "Personal Taste," Go Hye Sun in "Boys Over Flowers," Park Min Young in "City Hunter," Kim Hee Sun in "Faith" and his new drama, "The Heirs" will feature Park Shin Hye as his love interest. credit:kpopstarz
