Eminem may be a grizzled vet in the rap game, but he still keeps his ear to the streets for new music.

During an interview with The New York Times to discuss his upcoming film “Southpaw,” discussed how much he stays in tune with the latest trends in hip-hop. Later in the interview the Detroit rep shared his thoughts on the current state of rap music. “I try to stay up on everything that’s out,” said Em. “I love [Lil] Wayne, Drake, Big Sean, Schoolboy Q. I love Kendrick [Lamar]. I just try to pay attention to what’s out. Wayne puts out a new song, and my ears perk up.”
Later in the interview, Eminem shocked the world by stating who he thinks is the future of rap.

“There are certain artists that make me do that just because of the caliber that they rhyme at — it’s like candy to me. Kendrick, the way he puts albums together — front to back, they’re like pieces of art. But hip-hop needs Drake, too.”

Talk about a bold statement from the rap titan.
While we haven't had an album from the Toronto native since 2013, no one can deny Drake's importance to the rap culture. His mixtape “Nothing Was The Same” broke the Spotify stream record, pulling in 17.3 million streams in three days. The mixtape had no promo and dropped in the middle of the night on ITunes.
It’s great to hear Eminem name Kendrick and Lil Wayne, but I was surprised to hear him say we NEED Drake. The Toronto native is known by many for making great songs, but people often question how they fit together for a full body of work. I would have liked to hear Em mention J.Cole. Personally I think he’s a musician that I feel rap needs right now.
Do you think Eminem is right by saying hip-hop needs Drake? Is Drake the most important musician in rap right now?
@blazinpurplehl Drake is great at tapping into emotions on tracks. It takes you a place or moment in your life without focusing in on a particular storyline. He's great at it. That's why his music has such great replay value in my opinion
Yes is completely right. I agree with all his other choices too because those are my definite first choices in the first place. But Drake jut has something a lot of other rappers don't. I don't exactly know what it is but it's something
