Listen, man, I don't know about you but I used to hate seeing couples kiss in public. I don't know why people do it, I mean, yeah, you're right. I was totally kissing in public the other day but there's, like, a finesse to storytelling, you know?
I was trying to get you to wonder and get a sense of who I am and all of that. And yeah, I am trying to convince you why kissing in public is awesome but you have to let me work, man, you got to let me do my magic.
Alright, alright, no exposition. I'll get right to the chase but, man, I have to be honest with you. That's probably the worst way to tell a story. You don't just say, hey I have this story and then say one goddamned sentence and that's that. Long story short, it feels great. But you got to listen to the rest of this, alright?
Have you seen Punch Drunk Love? Yeah it's the one with, uh, yeah! That's his name. But, anyway, there's one scene in it, man. It's so beautiful. And I didn't find it beautiful until after, well, you know kissing in public and really going for it.
Anyway, the scene goes like this: He's going to meet this lady, right? And he extends his hand out right but, I don't know, they just bump into each other and start kissing, you know? And they're in this weird public space and they're kissing and that weird song is playing, right? No, no, that's not what I did, it was entirely different, I was just trying to set the stage for you, man. Storytelling, remember?
So, as the scene is happening they're kissing on the screen and just crowds and crowds of people move in and out of the frame as this music is playing. All you can see are silhouettes, you know? Back and forth and back and forth and back and forth and then they stop kissing. And everything is clear. You get it? You get what's going on here, man?
What do you mean you don't? It's all right in front of you, man. Before the kiss, during the kiss, there's all this stuff around them, it's crowded and cloudy and sort of hard to see what's going on. They sway back and forth, locked in a kiss, and then they stop kissing and we see what's important. Just them and nothing else.
And when you're with the right person, in the right place, at the right time in your life that's what it feels like, man. Nothing else in the world matters, it's just you and your partner. And that night, it was just me and my partner. Yeah, I used to hate kissing in public and, yeah, it was cold and I really wished I was inside watching Netflix, or something. But, like, I couldn't think about any of that.
I was in public, in a crowded space, and I felt completely at home. That's what it's about, man. It's not about whether or not you want to make out with someone in public.
