Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj Trade Remarks Over VMA Snub
Hell broke loose yesterday after the announcement of the VMA nominations. While Nicki Minaj’s video “Anaconda” was nominated for Best Hip Hop Video and Best Female Performance, the video was not selected for Best Video of the year.
With Barbz in tow, Minaj took to Twitter to announce her displeasure with the lack of nomination. One of the victims caught in the crossfire was Taylor Swift.

“If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year,” Minaj posted to Twitter.

Pop titan Taylor Swift - whose video “Bad Blood” was nominated caught wind of the subtweet and responded with a tweet of her own.
“@NICKIMINAJ I've done nothing but love & support you. It's unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot..” said Swift. Minaj didn’t appreciate the reply, and followed up with more strong statements on the matter.
“Huh? U must not be reading my tweets. Didn't say a word about u.” Nikki followed the tweet up with a screenshot from @kingcaleb stating “It’s not even shade to the other artists. It’s just that Nikki is getting snubbed for doing the same things they are winning awards for.”
Minaj then posed a question to Swift, saying “@taylorswift13 I'm still confused as to why u just tweeted me when I made it abundantly clear... “
Seeing that this conversation could get out of hand, Swift looked to take the high road (somewhat) and looked to end the discussion before things went too deep. “@NICKIMINAJ If I win, please come up with me!! You're invited to any stage I'm ever on.” said Swift.
A bit of shade thrown by Swift in that final tweet? hmmm..
I cooked the food, you guys can do the dishes.

"I cooked the food" LOL. I feel like Minaj has the right to be upset. She's an extremely talented artist and a very outspoken feminist- but it seems like while other artists (Swift included) are lauded for those things, Minaj is overlooked. I don't think she was dissing Swift at all- I think she was expressing her frustrations with the industry. Swift isn't to blame for that and I think they both know that... I just wish Swift had supported her instead of centering the issue around herself.

@shannonl5 thanks for checking out the card. For starters, I have mixed feelings on this one. I feel like the first comment tweet was clearly aimed at Swift or a general statement she can be boxed into. I love Minaj, but I think we all need to understand that 1) you cant be nominated for everything 2) Good things sometimes get overlooked. Beyonce may have been robbed years ago when Swift got her first big award. Kanye felt so strongly about the moment that he jumped on stage to speak, but Bey handled it with grace. I don't think this was a matter of Nicki against the world, but more of a fact that they didn't like the video.

@shannonl5 I have been in the situation in listening sessions FAR TOO MANY times.. everyone wants to be praised all of the time. Great artists take victories and defeats just as well. But hey, just my thoughts.

@christianmordi I definitely agree with you. I think the timing of the tweet was not ideal- I don't think Swift is the only person in the industry benefiting from the issues that Minaj is talking about, but she is the only female nominee I believe. That being said, I don't think it's a fair playing field right now. Being bitter about not being nominated for everything is really immature, but I don't think that's what's being said. Minaj is upset with an industry that privileges some performers and overlooks others- because of race, gender, body type- you name it honestly. Maybe there's a more graceful way of handling that frustration, but graceful might not get the job done.
