Easy Ombre How-To For Shirts
Summer is more than flip flops, maxi dresses, and chunky bangles. You can't forget about wearing your cute DIY ombre shirts. In fact, how cute would an ombre twist back tee be? You can see the twist back tee tutorial by clicking here. In the meantime, learn how to dip your shirt for a blended ombre (sombre) effect that is perfect for the summer.
Some things you'll need.
Turn your shirt inside out and mark the serged seam with a dot from a pen. Keep your marks about 1 inch apart. The more dots you have, the deeper the color saturation will be at the end. The fewer, the softer it will be.
TIP
If your shirt is free of seams as most t-shirts are, use pins in the shirt instead of dots.
Mix hot water with salt and soda ash:
Ratio of 1 gallon water : 1 cup salt : 1 tbsp soda ash
Dunk the shirt (inside out) and wring out thoroughly.
This part can be messy, so wear gloves and protect work surfaces!
In a bowl add 2 tbsp of powdered dye with a little water to form a thick paste.
Keep adding a little bit of hot water at a time until the paste is free of clumps and in a liquid state.
NOTE
The color used in this tutorial is Dharma's PR22 Cobalt.
To the bucket of salt and ash water, you need to add the bowl of dye 1/4 teaspoon at a time. The water should BARELY be tinted at this point. Test the color by inserting a white paper towel into the water.
Using a dowel or rod, drape the shirt over it and into the water up to the first dot at the very top of the shirt. You are going to be working from the top, down.
So, dunk the shirt all the way up to the first dot closest to the top of the shirt. Let it sit 3-5 minutes and then raise the shirt OUT OF THE WATER to the next dot.
Add another 1/4 tablespoon of dye from the bowl. You are going to repeat this process every time you move the shirt out of the water to the next dot. Be sure to stir gently so as not to flick water on the top part of the shirt.
Once you get to the end, wring the shirt out from top to bottom. The liquid should run down from the top of the shirt to the bottom and into the bowl.
Immediately wash this on COLD CYCLE in your washing machine and dry according to your preferred method.
To be sure that your washing machine is free of all dyes and residues, be sure to run the washer without clothing on cold for a short cycle.
