[Subject and I are parked on the side of the road. The sun is setting and he is smiling. He inhales and exhales before he lights a cigarette. For the first time, he seems genuinely happy. We are making good progress]
That's kind of a weird question, I mean, you ask me all this intimate stuff, you know? And today you start with "how are you feeling?" How do you think I'm feeling?
I know you're not supposed to answer questions or anything but look at where we are. Come on, [laughs] I'm feel pretty good. In this moment, you know. I'm trying to look at my life as a series of moments and I try to take in as much as I can while I'm there, while I'm living it.
I don't really know how to, well, um [pauses]. I'll just do it right now, alright. Here we go. [He takes a deep breath, turns towards me, and smiles]. Here I am, right now, looking at you. Looking at the way the sun bounces off your eyes, and the way the cigarette smoke rolls off my tongue as I speak to you. It tastes bad but I'm enjoying it. I'm watching the expression on your face, the way you smile small tiny smiles, the way you can't look me in the eyes, how your hand is gripped around that recorder -- it's okay that you're recording me, I'm okay with it, okay?
Yeah and there's a lot more to it. I want to remember these feelings and these images forever. I want to remember what it feels like to feel and when I'm with you, I'm better. I'm a better man, a happier one.
[Subject flicks cigarette away. Steps towards me. I drop the recorder. We kiss. End of interview]
[NOTE: While, yes, this is still included in Interviews with Man About Himself. This particular interview is a part of a series of Interviews about love. There is a smaller, more contained narrative within this particular collection of Interviews. This has been Part 9.]
