Bending the rules, one cosplay at a time

It's Sherlock's 5th anniversary! And yes, we're only three seasons in. And the next one is a long way away. So if you're looking to celebrate the occasion, you'll have to do it through fandom.
You know by now that I love genderswapped cosplays and fanart. These two women have definitely mastered the art. Not only are their costumes incredibly detailed, the AUs (alternate universes) that they create reflect the best of the Sherlock fandom. Stroll through memory lane with these amazing cosplayers leading the way!

Their punk!AU is perfect

Look at the skull! The beehive tattoo on Sherlock's neck! The 1895 Believe tattoo on John's arm! There are plenty of fanworks that re-imagine these characters in a punk rock setting. The rebellious nature of the punk movement blends perfectly with the transformative nature of fandom.

Remember John's red pants?

The fandom kind of lost it over the innocuous pair of... well. Either trousers or underwear, depending on what side of the pond you're on. Fan artist reapersun started the trend, featuring John Watson's bright red underpants. And the entire BBC fandom latched on to the idea.
Even though the excitement has kind of died down, remembering this fandom quirk always brings a smile to my face.

I think we all felt the same way about John's mustache.

And then there was the greaser!lock au.

You know the one.
Thou givest fever when we kisseth, fever with thy flaming youth Fever I'm afire; fever, yea, I burn forsooth "He's the kind of boy you want to take apart."
That time we all had strong feelings about a delinquent greaser version of Sherlock meeting a bookish shy John Watson. This idea deviated so dramatically from the original media, it's amazing how in-character it still feels.

That awkward 'not date' at Angelo's.

Aka the scene with the most unresolved sexual tension to ever air on television. Except in this version, we actually get the happy ending we were all rooting for. How great is that?

And there's a subtle homage to jam, too.

All of these in-jokes exist because the fandom has grown so close over the years. Whether it's the long hiatuses, or our passion for the characters, we've built and immensely creative, incredibly bizarre community dedicated to the show. So seeing these cosplays is a wonderful reminder of all the things we love about each other.
