Experts all agree: artificial intelligence and autonomous weapons are dangerous. Togethers they created a letter as a call to ban “offensive autonomous weapons" presented at the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Buenos Aires, Argentina. 1,000s of robotic experts signed a letter including: Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, Demis Hassabis and Stephen Hawking.
“AI technology has reached a point where the deployment of [autonomous weapons] is – practically if not legally – feasible within years, not decades, and the stakes are high: autonomous weapons have been described as the third revolution in warfare, after gunpowder and nuclear arms.”
So what’s so bad about autonomous weapons huh? It means we are using less humans, and therefore, less people are hurt...right? Well, that might be the case for the people WITH the weapons but for those are attacked by them, it’s a little harder to tell.
We are in a new age of weapons and change. And while new technology is better for us, every other country is bringing a knife to a gun fight...get what I mean?
In a sense it dehumanizes the act of killing, let the machine be in charge.
The other side to the argument is this: The US military needs to stay on top. If we are competing against other countries like Russia who are also looking into this technology.
Despite the two sides, the researchers are calling Artificial Intelligence: “our biggest existential threat” and that the development of full AI could “spell the end of the human race.”
We’ll see if their request will be recognized, or if their letter will just be “terminated."
