Awkward Age Meets Awkward Decade: Preteening In The 90s

This weekend, I got to meet up with my middle school best friend, Janice, for the first time in 16 years. We was born in 1986, thus by the time 1996 came along, we'd been thrust into middle school, also known as the three years you really get to explore your awkward side.
When talking to Janice and going through old pictures, I realized just how different it was to grow up in the 90s - a time before Facebook, when the coolest thing you could own wasn't an iPhone, but a Furby.
I decided to make a card picking out some of my favorite (and weird) parts of being a preteen in the 90s. Snake people, brace yourselves. It's going to be a real throwback.

You listened to your big sister's musical hand-me-downs.

Everyone loved the songs on TRL, but no one that wanted to look 'cool' ever admitted to it. Instead, they jacked their older siblings' copies of Nirvana's 'Nevermind' or Smashing Pumpkins' 'Siamese Dream' and tried to cling onto the fading grunge scene.

You mocked the kids grinding to R&B at the dance.

For the in crowd, a dance meant getting to feel up your crush under the guise of 'dancing'. For the rest of us, it meant eye-rolling at everyone and everything. (My school had its own choreography for Will Smith's 'Wild Wild West'. They did at every dance. It was the worst.)

You had a goth phase.

Back before hipsters, there were goths. They worshiped all things Brandon Lee and Fairuza Balk. They shopped exclusively at Hot Topic, listened to Tool, and only really hung out with other goths. Being broody and cynical was super hot in the 90s. Everyone wanted to be one.

Slumber parties were meant for all the scary games.

Ever since you tried 'Bloody Mary', you've never dared to again. Ouija boards always became the party's main event, even when you knew someone was cheating. And if you didn't have a Ouija, 'Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board' was a perfectly freaky substitute.

Your best friend was the first to see your newly dyed hair.

Sometime between 7th and 8th grade, you felt an urge to do something drastic with your hair. It's just what happened on the way to becoming a woman. Whether you used Kool-Aid, Sun-In, or something else from the store, your BFF was there to assure you it looked killer.

You had a Teen Beat BAE.

Before boyfriends and first kisses ever played a factor in your life, you were loyally devoted to Devon Sawa. Or maybe you were a JTT or Taylor Hanson girl or had a thing for, of course, Justin Timberlake. You had a celeb you called dibs on, and if another girl tried, it was war.
I hope you enjoyed reliving the awkward yet hilarious reality of 90s middle school life with me. If you can think of any other ridiculous things we did back then, feel free to comment with some below. I'm sure there's A LOT I didn't cover!
or was nobody cheating on the Ouija board... spooky spooky haha
Oh man I love this card haha. I was just too young to experience the best of 90's culture, but these all remind me of the "big girls" I aspired to be like back then :D
@jokes DUN DUN DUNNNN.. you have a point. Touche, friend. Touche.
If Jamaican children ever did most of these things, we'd get some licks. Jamaican parents don't play when it comes to the belt.
@danidee seems that way

This was a 3 member group. Back in the early 90's 3 memeber groups were popular. The members of this group were Seo Taiji, Yang Hyun-suk and Lee Juno. They were know for working with an array of different genres. This group was way before their time. Many songs they created made many people upset (parents) due to having heavy influences from gangsta rap and rock music which was very popular during this time in America. Some songs were called unfit due to the lyrics and screaming in the background. Keep in mind this was during the time politicians were pushing for parental advisory labels and blaming music for the wild behaviors of the youth. Source "Come Back Home" by Seo Taiji and Boys This song was a huge hit in 1995. This song has a huge influence from American gangsta rap which was hot back in the USA during this time. 1993: Deux ( 듀스) This was a two member group (1993-1995). They were a well known Korean hip hop group back in the day. These guys hard work was helpful in building what we know as Kpop today. Kpop is not just pop music per se, but it has influences from other genres. The members are Lee Hyun Do and Kim Sung Jae. These two had major influences in the dance and fashion world as well. Source "Turn Around and Look at Me" was a hot song introduced in 1993. You can look at tell how their style as influenced today's Kpop artists. 1996- 2001H.O.T. (에이치오티) They were also known as High-five of teenagers. This was a group of 5 guys. This group was under SM. They were very popular and were the first group in Kpop to produce an album that was brought in a million dollars. Source "We are the Future" by H.O.T. This was another number 1 hit for this group. This song was released in 1998. Wow look at the difference in fashion and technology! 1999- present Fly to the Sky (플라이 투 더 스카이) This is a two member group under the SM umbrella. Unlike the other groups mentioned in this card this group is still active according to sources. Brian Joo and Hwanhee are the members of this group. Brian is American and Hwanhee is from Korean. That itself represents the merge of two different cultures. One big thing about older groups that still are active today is that they all learn to evolve and remake themsleves. This is exactly what this group has done. They were more into techno and very pop like music in the past. However, later in their music journey they began producing more R&B music. Source "Sea of Love" was released in 2002. I couldn't find any older m/v of them! I'm so sorry! 7 Iconic Prince Songs To Remember His Legacy
Today we've lost a legend. At age 57, iconic pop star Prince has died. He was the voice behind "Purple Rain" and "Let's Go Crazy" singing pop hits to define the generation. Prince was a man of secrecy, pure exclusivity, and always stayed at a firm distance from his fans letting the music only speak for itself. Like the passings of Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston, Prince will go down in history as another pop legend who died too young. Prince passed away at 10:07 a.m. CT in his Paisley Park residence this morning. He was found unconscious in an elevator by a man whose name has yet to be released. The man called 911 at 9:43 a.m. and when paramedics arrived, they were unable to revive the legend after attempting CPR. Though cause of death originally claimed to be from a severe flu, new information is slowly pointing to a drug overdose. There are no signs of fowl play. "The person is dead here. ... And the people are just distraught," the man told the police dispatcher. Prince's autopsy is set for Friday. Below I have provided a list of 7 of Prince's greatest hits and the iconic lyrics from each: 1. Purple Rain I never meant to cause you any sorrow I never meant to cause you any pain I only wanted one time to see you laughing I only want to see you laughing in the purple rain. 2. Let's Go Crazy Instead of asking him how much of your time is left Ask him how much of your mind, baby 'Cause in this life Things are much harder than in the after world In this life You're on your own. 3. When Doves Cry This is what it sounds like When doves cry. 4. Kiss You don't have to be rich To be my girl You don't have to be cool To rule my world Ain't no particular sign I'm more compatible with I just want your extra time and your Kiss. 5. Raspberry Beret She wore a Raspberry beret The kind you find in a second hand store Raspberry beret And if it was warm she wouldn't wear much more Raspberry beret I think I love her. 6. Little Red Corvette Little red Corvette Baby you're much too fast. 7. 1999 I was dreamin' when I wrote this So sue me if I go 2 fast But life is just a party, and parties weren't meant 2 last War is all around us, my mind says prepare 2 fight So if I gotta die I'm gonna listen 2 my body tonight Yeah, they say two thousand zero zero party over, Oops out of time So tonight I'm gonna party like it's 1999.
Confessing Your Love with Classic 00's Pop
With all these flash mob engagement videos going around, it has got me wondering why more people aren't using this style when it comes to asking a girl to the movies or finding a prom date?! This is a fool-proof way to confess your love! Do it now!! 1. BBMak - Back Here There will never be anything more romantic than BBMak's Back Here. Nothing. You will melt hearts from the very first line. 2. 98 Degrees - I Do Super cheesy and super smooth, you can't go wrong with Nick Lachey & co's "I Do (Cherish You). Make sure you have the hoop earrings in both ears. It's all part of the package. 3. N'Sync - I Promise You The best part of this is even if you panic and stop singing, your audience will pick up the slack for you. No one can resist singing along with this chorus. 4. Savage Garden - Truly Madly Deeply How can you think of a 90s pop song and not think of Savage Garden!? Guaranteed your crush will want to stand with you on a mountain. (Shout out to "I Knew I Loved You" - I could only put one of you on the list!) 5. Backstreet Boys - I Want it That Way If the object of your love is not jumping into your arms before you hit this chorus you need to find another crush. This one clearly isn't worth it. This is arguably one of the best love song in history (coming from a serious Backstreet Boys fan...) so people who don't appreciate it don't deserve to be loved. 6. Enrique Iglesias - Hero Best way to get anyone to fall in love with you: look like Enrique Iglesias. If you can't: sing like him. 7. Avril Lavigne - Sk8ter Boi I don't care how you do it, but taking a few minutes to change the lyrics to Sk8ter Boi will win anyone's heart. Or at least mine. Call me. 8. A-Teens - Can't Help Falling in Love This doesn't need an explanation. Bonus points if you can get the choreography down too. 9. S Club 7 - You'e My Number One I am smiling like an idiot right now just listening to this song. It's catchy, sweet, and fun. S Club 7 can seriously do no wrong. They won't let you down.

I love music. Yes, I do. That's all. My friends say songs that you hear define your age; for me it is more to era. My friends are about 10-15 years older than me, but I'm more to the songs that they hear in 80's or 90's than to the songs that my friends who are 10 years younger than me (read Katty Perry, Jessie J, Nicky Minaj, etc). Even, that 70's songs or less still catch my heart. My friends who are younger than me laugh at me when I play these songs or even know what the lyrics are and how to sing it. They will put me in the same taste with their parents'. It is fine and I don't mind. Why do I have to? These songs are everlasting. I will remember how my dad played the songs everytime we were in the car in our way to some place and we sang, my dad,my mom,and I. Everytime we were together he always played songs. Yes, he loved music as well. I have these 10 songs that are always in my mind. Of course I still have hundreds, but I just give us 10 songs that may take you back to a moment that probably the moment when you dated your wife or husband. A moment when you broke up with your lover, or maybe a moment like mine when you were just this 4,5,or 6 year little kid who loved the songs because your parents loved them. Here they are: 1. I'll remember you by Atlantic Starr 2. I don't have the heart to hurt you by James Ingram 3. Hard to say I'm sorry by Chicago 4. Just the way you are by Billy Joel 5. If you leave me now by Chicago 6. Till I find you again by Richard Marx 7. After all by Al Jarreau 8. After the love has gone by Earth, Wind, and Fire 9. Why goodbye by Peabo Bryson 10. Stuck on you by Lionel Richie Let's listen to them and tell me what do you feel?
