Naughty Dog: Doing Fanservice Correctly
Games are an experience that kind of inherently warrant a certain level of sharing. No matter what the game or the platform, players rejoice in sharing in their victories (and defeats) with their peers. It isn't hard to imagine many nights being passed with friends gathered around a television, playing the same game together.
This bond isn't something just shared between friends, though. In many people's cases, gaming is shared across generations. For one redditor in particular, it was an experience he liked to share with his father.
Reddit user Deadmanx132489 posted yesterday about how he would play Crash Team Racing with his father as a kid, and when his father's health began to decline, they played The Last of Us together. He unfortunately lost his father four months ago.
The loss prompted him to pen a letter to Naughty Dog, the creator of both these titles, thanking them for their games. In his post yesterday, he demonstrates that after three months, Naughty Dog responded with a letter and a package for him.
The above letter reads as such:
Thank you so much for writing to us and sharing your story. I can’t begin to tell you how much it touched our hearts here at Naughty Dog. And knowing how involved our games were with you and your father is amazing to hear.
Stories like yours are the reason why we work so hard to make great games, and reading that The Last of Us changed your life is inspiring. When I read that you felt you were with your father again while playing it, it nearly drove me to tears. I can’t imagine the pain you went through these last several months, but I’m touched that we’ve been able to help you get through it.
Please enjoy these items being sent over for you. We hope you like them and hope your continued support of our games carries on. When you receive this, please send me an email with your shirt size, I’d love to send some shirts. Thank you again for writing in ____ you’re a true inspiration for all of us!
It's heart warming to see how profoundly games can impact people's lives. Even more heart warming is to see a connection being made and honored between game creators and the players. This, friends, is how you build fanservice and a life-loyal userbase.
Condolences for Deadmanx132489, and hats off to Naughty Dog for their response.
