I woke up
one night
cold sweat
rivers in my bed
a wailing behind
my closet door
scared, but dumb
I left the safety of bed
I opened the door
I don't know
what I expected
but Death
wasn't it
More than that
I was not prepared
for Death
weeping on my floor
He knew I was there
I'm sure
But he didn't move
only cried.
And then I knew
that when there is no one left
to mourn your passing
that, too, is Death's duty.
