The recently released trailer for Spotlight follows the Boston Globe's tense investigation of the allegations of child molestation made against the Catholic Church. The content of the trailer is just as intense as the subject matter it's covering and the performances shown help magnify the tension that's found within the narrative of the film.
When I first watched the trailer, I was worried about the way the film would tackle such a delicate subject matter. But as it went on and the actors got some "room to breathe" (by this I mean that the latter half of the trailer puts more focus on the performances), I felt the worries drift away. Mark Ruffalo and Michael Keaton's two intense moments in particular stick out to me.
It's been a while since I've felt so gripped and engaged by the performances of a cast after watching a trailer. Part of me is still worried, though, but it's a different kind of worry. I have a feeling that I know I'll enjoy the film once it's released and within that same feeling is fear of how the subject matter will affect me after the film is finished.
Spotlight will be in theaters on November 6th, 2015
