Whether you change your mind at the last-minute or you're looking to score a metallic cake for cheap, here's a smart way to transform your white wedding cake into pure edible gold (or silver if you like).
For this to work, however, your cake needs to be covered in white fondant. Unless you're a pro, I wouldn't recommend trying to pull off rolling your own fondant hours before the wedding. NO BUENO!
Cakes are already expensive. Adding gold leaf to the order and it virtually doubles in cost. That's because the gold (or metal of your choice) is expensive to begin with. Throw in design fees and labor costs, and it's a budget-breaker.
But as I mentioned, if you're looking to save costs on it, order your all-white fondant cake (without any flair). This will give you all flat surfaces to work with. For this to work you are going to need:
A steady hand
A blush brush (the type that is used for makeup. Please buy a brand new one for this!)
Edible gold leaf (23 or 24k which can be bought online or at cake shops)
Once your cake has been GENTLY spritzed with vodka, wait a couple seconds to begin attaching the gold leaf.
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PEEL SHEETS BY HAND. YOU WILL DESTROY IT AND HAVE A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN!
Look at the picture. You want to CAREFULLY apply the sheets directly from the book to the cake. Take your time with this part. If you rush it, you will ruin it.
Using a CLEAN and BRAND NEW blush brush, GENTLY swab across the gold leaf that is on the cake. This should be very gentle and almost not even touch the cake.
Continue doing this for each tier separately. DO NOT ATTEMPT to do this on a tiered cake that is already stacked, unless you are a pro.
Finish the top last and fill in any gaps or holes that may have occurred along the way.
Once, your tiers are completely covered, TAKE YOUR TIME AND GENTLY stack the tiers.
Hold your breath, say a prayer, and stare at the cake, willing it to be perfect!
Under the right lighting the cake will look nothing less than stunning! Marvel at your achievement and breathe a sigh of relief when it makes it through the night!
