The most epic of retcons.
Hercules isn't the most popular character in the Marvel Universe (that honor could go to Iron Man, Wolverine, or Spider-Man). Based on the Greek mythological character, Hercules has made plenty of appearances since he was introduced to the comics in 1965. And just like the hero of antiquity, the comic book character was bisexual.
Remember that time he made out with Wolverine?
Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief made it clear in a recent interview that Hercules' sexuality in previous universes will not be part of the upcoming comics.
Hercules and James Howlett's relationship in "X-Treme X-Men" took place in a unique alternate universe, similar to how Colossus was gay in the Ultimate Universe, but is straight in the 616. Same goes for Hercules here.
So, a character that has been bisexual in both canon, history, and spinoff series will now be solely heterosexual? And here I thought Marvel was going in an All-New, All-Different direction. This just seems like another hyper-masculine white male power fantasy.
The comics demographic is changing. The world is changing.
Why isn't Marvel trying harder to keep up? Their new lineup is impressive, there's no doubt about that. But now, amid complaints that the company is appropriating hip-hop culture without hiring a single African-American writer, Marvel is actually taking a step backwards and turning a once progressive character into a traditional one. Are they just being oblivious, or do they really not understand that they're making a mistake?
