While fall shopping is one of the more exciting times of summer for some of us, you don't need to replace your whole wardrobe just because the seasons are changing. You also don't need to pack away your summer clothes for good just because it'll soon be 60 degrees instead of 80. Summer dresses have an important place in our closets (and hearts!), and here's how to keep wearing them come fall.
Layer a chunky pullover sweater over a straight-hanging dress or slipdress.
The sweater-dress combination is a basic but important one to master, especially come fall. What was once a light and breezy dress becomes a pretty skirt that's grounded for fall with a chunky sweater over. The juxtaposition between a lightweight skirt that drapes over your legs and a boxy sweater is cozy but flattering on a crisp day.
Wear leather leggings under your short and swingy sundresses.
Leather leggings don't just keep you warm; they take the summer out of any sundress or top. For the cleanest look, layer them under a simple solid dress and add booties or high boots to cover the cuffs of your leggings. A leather jacket over your dress will keep the look fall-ready from top to bottom, while adding some edge.
Wear an army green jacket over your simple work dresses + add booties.
Army green is the most fall-ready color. What was once a slinky and simple summer dress you wore from work to drinks is fall ready with an army jacket of any cut (moto, button-up or zip-up). Add chunky booties to complete the bare-legged look that's perfect for fall.
Wear your pretty shirt-dress over tights and boots and under a chunky cardigan.
If your tights are opaque and the dress is longer, unbutton the last button or two to let the skirt flare out under your sweater. Opt for a sweater in a similar color story to the dress instead of a bold contrast, to make the dress feel less summery.
Wear a sheer dress over skinny jeans instead of its intended slip for a cool layering effect. If you have a sheer floaty dress that you like to wear over slips, make it less feminine and sweet by adding your favorite skinny jeans underneath in lieu of the slip. It'll keep you warm and look more interesting. Add a chunky sweater over the dress too, of course.
Add some prep to a sleeveless dress with a white button-down blouse underneath.
Your favorite flowery tank or strappy a-line dress just got made-over for fall with a crisp white button-down worn underneath. Button it up to the top so your collar is flush against your neck, high over the neckline of your dress, and if this look is going in too preppy a direction for you, add some tough and chunky booties.
Wear a long sleeveless jacket over your dress and add booties.
Tailored vests and sleeveless jackets and big this season, and add a kind of crispness that can only be associated with fall to an otherwise summery sundress. Add a tailored vest to anything floaty, floral, ruffled or semi-sheer- any of your favorite sundresses, really- and then keep warm in booties.
